When to take antidepressants

Posted by km3117 @km3117, Dec 13, 2021

I am currently taking fluoxetine daily and have noticed that most of my symptoms (now and in the past) have been at night. Does anyone know if there is a best time to take my medication so it is more effective at night? Thank you

Hi @km3117 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

According to the website, it says to take fluoxetine once a day. You can take it with or without food. You can take fluoxetine at any time, as long as you stick to the same time every day. If you have trouble sleeping, it's best to take it in the morning.
For example, the manufacturer of Prozac (fluoxetine) recommends it be taken in the morning because it can make some people feel more energized, especially at the beginning of treatment, but if you are having trouble with depression at night I would talk to your physician about switching to take it in the evening.

Do you have problems sleeping while on the medication?

I take my buproprion in the morning and notice a dip in my mood around bedtime.
