When to start worrying about blast percentage changes?

Posted by lmkmom @lmkmom, Oct 27 7:50pm

I have myelofibrosis and my blast counts have normally been in the one to 2% . Today my blast count was 17%. Is that normal for someone with myelofibrosis or should I be looking at possibly having leukemia?
Also, my once high platelet count is dropping drastically . Its scary seeing sudden changes

Hi, @lmkmom. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that all goes smoothly and you can have the BMT in December. There are quite a few of us who have gone through the procedure and recovery so if there’s anything we can help you with just let us know.

A few years ago I started a discussion encouraging others to share their transplant stories along with mine. You may want to do the same. You can also ask questions about your upcoming BMT in that discussion. Here’s the link:

Did you hear back from your doctor about the latest blood results showing the blast increase?

@lmkmom I’m not sure you’ve seen my latest reply to you. Here’s the link: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/1426156/

I did have a very aggressive situation with AML, (acute myeloid leukemia) now almost 7 years ago. I dealt with all the chemo, reached remission and had a bone marrow transplant. The BMT was a success, I’ve been in a durable remission since, living my best 2nd life.
That’s why I became a mentor in this BMT/SCT Support group…to offer hope for anyone going through these challenging times with leukemia and the possibility of having a BMT.
Years ago, there weren’t many options for patients with AML, Now there are treatments available and for many, if they are eligible, a BMT is a potential cure for a once incurable disease.

I’m here for you anytime you need a lifeline, @lmkmom. I know how frightening this can be but it’s doable. For myself and the many others in Connect who have gone through the same scenario, we got through it by taking one day at a time, trying to stay as positive as possible and to have future goals in mind to keep us motivated through some of the more challenging days.
So the first thing is to get that BMBX to see what the results show. It’s an integral tool for your doctor to see the overall health of your bone marrow and if there is a progression of your disease. Let me know what you find out and I’ll be here to hold your hand all the way, ok? Hugs.
