What type and amount of Magnesium supplement is needed for bone health

Posted by chiefsmom @chiefsmom, Jan 14 3:45pm

I have osteoporosis and am currently taking Vitamin D with K2 and between 1000 and 1200 mg calcium either through diet or supplement. I've read that Magnesium is also needed. Does anyone take a Magnesium supplement and if so, what type and amount? Thanks.

There really isn’t one # fits all, as we all react differently to magnesium….i have heard that the critical bone supplementation needs to contain a lot of D3 and K2. Keep researching and even do trial/error, though on the gentler side !

@kathleen1314 Thank you for the insight Kathleen, I appreciate you.

I'm having a difficult time finding a team of doctors to work with: bone doctor, endocrinologist and PT. So I'm trying to do what I can now until I can get appointments. But it doesn't end there. Then there's deciding if that provider is right for me.

I went to a "bone specialist" last week that I'd waited 6 weeks to get into. I am still hurting from his exam. From what I'm learning through my own research, we're not supposed to twist, bend forward or arch back, and he forced all those things.

He did give me a prescription for PT 3x week for 6 weeks, and a list of practitioners, and again, I have to wait 1 month to get in to see the highly recommended one. So I'll be calling a ton more offices tomorrow to see if I can get in sooner.

I wish there was some sort of directory for each area of tried and true practitioners, but as yet, I haven't found that.

I'm not sure where you are located. When I search for doctors in the USA I use Health US News to find highly rated doctors; then I check with on line reviews; then drill down with insurance and locations.

@kathleen1314 This is really helpful, Kathleen, thank you.

I see that I can get lost in this site for hours.

BTW: I am located on the North Shore of Long Island.

And, does it matter if you take the magnesium and calcium at the same time? Or do they need to be taken a certain number of hours apart?

Magnesium Glycinate 200 mg. My 56 year old daughter takes it for muscle cramps. After one injection of Prolia I decided to stop taking it because of side effects. It's been 9 months and I've started having terrific muscle cramps. My internist told me to take Magnesium Glycinate. It has helped. You can get it at any drug store.
My bottle suggests 2 a day, after food. I never take more than 1 since I tend to have side effects from just about everything. My daughter buys the Sam's Club ones. I got a common brand at Walmart and they are horse pills. So, you might want to check the size of the pill or capsule. I spoke with a friend who just quit Prolia after 2 injections and her muscle cramps were so bad she had to go to the ER. I read where the rebound after quitting Prolia after 2 injections is 30 months. Also, my total cholesterol went up to 236, and I had a reaction to Lidocaine. The dentist sent me to an allergist. I'd never had a reaction to Lidocaine before. The allergist said that the Prolia lowers the immune system and that I probably had a reaction to the preservative in the lidocaine. I see no reason to ever take another bone med. I do Pilates twice a week where we work with resistance bands, and I wear a weighted belt when I walk for exercise. I'm sticking with holistic methods.

Thanks for your response. What type of Magnesium is in the multi vitamin and in the night time supplement you take? Glycinate, Citrate, etc.?

@chiefsmom I'd love to know the difference in all the types of magnesium and which is most appropriate for osteoporosis.

My rheumatologist felt I would get enough magnesium from food, so I decided not to take a magnesium supplement.

@chiefsmom I’ve read that women should get no more than 340 mg of magnesium daily. It’s hard to get a supplement in that specific dose (I’ve looked; if anyone has, drop it here!). My women’s 50+ multivitamin has 55 mg of magnesium in it, and at night, I take a 250 mg supplement an hour before bed.

Docs don’t tell us this info - why, I don’t know - but I’d like to know too. So far, I’m abiding by the 340 mg, and get 305 mg per day. We also get some from food, but I calculate and document my calcium from food every single day, and that’s enough work for me, lol.

I take K2 with D3 and Magnesium Glycinate. Not MagOx. I have certainly noticed a change especially with the Magnesium Glycinate. I helps with relaxation and thus my spinal muscles aren’t as tight.

Hello,
I was taking a magnesium supplement for bone health- normal dosage. My blood work came back with high magnesium level & Dr said to stop taking it. I stopped. I also use raw honey in my morning coffee. Did some research. Raw honey contains magnesium. My blood magnesium level is now normal.
