What to expect and chances of getting in?

Hi! So I just had my first initial call yesterday and they went over paper work and my symptoms. Is it going to be a phone call or will it be on the portal? What are the chances of me not getting in? I'm going in for heart issues and a lot of other problems. What should I expect these coming weeks?

I feel like I made a mistake calling in to try to get an appointment instead of typing something out. I focused on the most recent issues (ENT-related) and was asked to get those records submitted, which I did (think they were all submitted a few days ago). This has been a very long and complex illness, though, which has in recent months completely compromised my ability to function as a provider, husband and father. I'm afraid my foggy brain didn't do a great job of advocating for why Mayo is right for me. Like others, I've seen so many doctors and really have nowhere else to turn at this point.

@roch and @colleenyoung , I assume once my initial call happened and now I'm waiting for a review/decision, I don't really have an opportunity to provide more background. Also seeing crazy wait times for appointments from some people, hoping that's not always the case...

@coyote13, it sounds like you took the right steps to getting an appointment. Whether you call or fill out the online form, the process is the same. The online form asks for inital infomation and to schedule a phone appointment. It is a good idea to have your main points written out for the phone call to make sure you don't forget anything.

After the initial phone call, the scheduler will submit your records to the appropriate department for review by Mayo Clinic specialist(s).

The time to wait for acceptance approval and/or an appointment varies depending on the department, how busy it is and its capacity to take on new patients.

If you have concerns about the information you gave to the scheduler, you or your provider can contact the appointment office to add any important information.

@roch and @colleenyoung thank you both and I will do! They have reviewed my husbands records and they gave us a referral to a different department than what we applied for but that is no issue for us! The department we were referred to gave us a call and asked for more information about his health. Is this a good sign and normal to do be referred to a different department than applied and is this a good step into getting approved and close to getting an appointment at the mayo clinic? We are super excited and happy to get accepted and for once resolve my husband issues that he has been struggling with for three years now that has stopped him from living. Thank you thank you for the support and answers!

@lpsinduced, that's great news to hear your husband got an appointment. Upon reviewing his medical records, they chose the best departement to start with. The physician that he will be seeing is your starting point, your quarterback so to speak.

@colleenyoung , thank you for the quick reply. I'm sure this describes many who try to get appointments there, but I'm desperate and wouldn't even know where else to turn, so I'm very pre-worried about being turned down.

@colleenyoung thank you! Just got off the phone with the new department we got referred and they stated we should receive a response of approval in 1-2 days from the GI department in to see if we are accepted or not. I'm feeling nervous and scared. If they do decide on passing us on what would you recommend to do? my husband has various symptoms that started from GI but have developed to Rheumatologist Neurologist and Cardiologist due to his stomach issues. What are the chances of getting accepted by GI ? and can we try again with a different department such as neurolgy if needed as he suffer from brainfog 24/7.

@colleenyoung I couldn’t agree more with your point of having a written record. It’s so easy to forget stuff going off memory alone. I keep an updated document now of medical history. It just easier in phone discussions or office visits to have a document to refer to.

@colleenyoung my husband got denied for GI sadly. What other options do you suggest, we are trying neurologist as he has neuro issues as well but not sure what to do next.

@colleenyoung Is it possible to forward records to Mayo Clinic and have them reviewed for a second opinion based on CT scan, MRI and other records? I am in the kaiser system so I would need to pay myself as I doubt they will cover anything outside the system. I have been frustrated with them as everything has to go through the primary care doctor and I have not been able to talk to the neurologist following my brain bleed, concussion and TBI. It's just been 4 months so maybe I should wait until the end of 6 months to get more assurance everything is on the right track and healing. Thanks for any advice.

@waterwoman9 I do not know if this would be helpful: I was at Mayo for my heart; my cardiologist sent my tests and whatever else was requested to the cardiology department when he referred me. My particular surgery, septal myectomy, is unavailable in my home network. My insurance, in its mission statement, specifically reads worldwide coverage. Would it be possible for your neurologist office to send copies of your CT, MRI and other records to the appropriate department at Mayo?
