What neurological autoimmune disease causes night sweats (just legs)?

Posted by vball91 @vball91, May 23 11:19am

Background: I have an unknown autoimmune neurological disorder that affects the my cerebellum. I’ve been to Mayo, and my working diagnosis is autoimmune cerebellar ataxia. But that doesn’t tell me what exactly is the autoimmune cause. I test negative for all known antibodies.

Anyway, a newer symptom is night sweats, but only on my legs. I wake up 3-5 times a night with my legs drenched in sweat. Could that be because of an autoimmune neurological disease? I’m just waiting for that missing puzzle piece that will cause doctors to say, “ah! You have XYZ.”

@vball91 Thanks!
Either did I. After 30 years of having Lupus - I am 67, I thought I’d heard about a lot of those autoimmune diseases. And this one kinda pushed Lupus aside & wanted to be the big star of the show. HA! I’m just very grateful I didn’t stroke out or lose my sight which can easily happen. It is a form of Vasculitis that can affect your body anywhere but especially in the head in the temporal region. I had real troubles with my left eye but it’s getting better & Mayo Opthamologist will see if they have to do surgery to preserve vision once aim tapered way down on Prednisone.
I love Mayo Clinic for everything they did & are continuing to do for me!

We have something in common: I'm 68 and diagnosed with autoimmune illness when I was 31. I haven't "met" many other with the "half a lifetime" illness. Your clarity about your temporal and giant cell arteritis will help others.
I also thought I knew my illnesses and nothing would be different with age...HA! is right!

I have Hashimoto’s which is an autoimmune disease, with Hypothyroidism, which can cause excess sweating. You could also be at the age where perimenopause begins, which could cause this as well. I recall sweating from every pore, every 20 minutes, throughout the day and night. I felt palpitations around my neck/chest area so my doctor did an EKG on me. That came out fine, but then I went to see my gynecologist and found that I was in perimenopause and those were hot flashes I was having. So, I was put on Hormone Replacement Therapy. I wear an Estrogen Patch and also take Progesterone orally. That was a total game changer for me. Sweating subsided and I felt so much better. That was when I was in my early 50’s. Now, I will be turning 70 and am still taking the hormones with no issues. I later, like 20 years later, found out that I also have Hashimoto’s with Hypothyroidism, for which I am now on medication for and have altered my diet for the Hashimoto’s. I also suffer from Long Covid and that has its own set of symptoms! Wishing you well!

@lkirnbauer Thanks for the reply! Glad your night sweats improved. I have hypothyroidism, too. Well, had? I was put on medication and now it’s more hyperthyroidism. I haven’t been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s.

FYI, my doc recommended i buy the Kardia device that uses an app to do an EKG the minute you feel fluttering. Almost impossible to catch unless you wear a device 24-48 hrs. It was $199 on Amazon.

Higher likelihood of dying of a heart attack with Hashimoto's & hypothyroidism so we should be aware and mitigate if possible.

BTW, I mentioned this casually, his reaction was OH Yes you definitely are more prone than those without Hashimotos. I was kind of shocked and sad he'd NEVER mentioned it, not until id READ about it.

Education is KEY to survival with Autoimmune, in fact a mix of Western & Eastern medicine is best. I believe in Integrative medicine which starts at the Gut, your other Brain.

Food is medicine is no joke, im GF, Dairy free (cheese on occasion), no processed foods. Make all my own bone broth & only thing I cook with is what I made (for the most part). With the SIBO I have its difficult because steroids ruin my gut 😔

Good luck & we all have to hang in, give ourselves lots of Grace and ask for help when we need it.

Peace ✌️ Health & Happiness to All 🙏 🤲 ❤️
