What happens at a first appointment on a Friday afternoon?

My son's first appointment with neurology in Jacksonville is on a Friday afternoon. I am assuming testing will be ordered. When will they do this testing? Do they do it on the weekend or would we have to stay until Monday? I am actually hoping a functional MRI will be ordered and we will be traveling about 6 hrs for this appointment.

Welcome to Mayo Connect. I am sorry I cannot give you a definite answer on if and when testing will be scheduled. I go to Rochester Mayo and due to high demand for MRIs, radiology does run extended shifts.

Has your son created a sign-on to Mayo Portal? Appointments may be added as you get closer to the appointment date. If he is a minor or your his caretaker, there is process for caretakers to acess his portal.

Also, has your son had recent MRIs done elsewhere and have the scans been shared with Mayo?

I see mentor had answered your question she or I can.

I go to Mayo Jacksonville. Many of the test like CTs and MRIs are in such demand they schedule them way up into the night. My wife has had MRIs at 11 p.m.

Mentor had mentioned the portal where you can see your test, contact your doctors, etc.
Good luck

Yes we have the portal and he has had several tests with normal results. There is only thr initial appointment in the portal and they do have previous tests.

@pediatrixjlr I have found the Mayo Clinic staff to be extremely responsive and helpful through the online portal.

If you have questions about what will happen at your appointment on Friday, send them a message and ask! I would do it sooner than later to give them time to respond to you. They know what they are going to do and they will certainly explain it to you. 😊

@pediatrixjlr I forgot to add one thing….. you need to be your own advocate.
Before I had my first appointment at the Mayo Clinic, I had my local doctor perform an x-ray, MRI, and CAT scan and then sent all the imaging to the Mayo Clinic so the surgeon could review it prior to my appointment.
I know each case is different and what you and your son are going through is completely different than what I’m going through, I just want to stress that it’s OK for you to ask questions and if you do research, you can request tests. All they can do is say yes or no.

Regarding testing, I avoid doing local testing and lab work if it is relevant to my treatments at Mayo. The reason is to have consistency in testing and reporting.
I had a pulmonary function test done before transferring to Mayo and they were going to repeat it before my surgery, but I gave that one to them because it was recent. After I discovered errors in the report and now I don't have that test as a baseline for where I am now.

@vic83 Yes that makes sense about the testing. Mayo wanted to do my presurgery bloodwork because they wanted to do specific testing.
They were fine with me getting the MRI, x-ray, and cat scan locally because they said imaging would be the same if I had gotten it done at Mayo.

In my case the CT scan is set specifically to find nodules.
Mayo pulled up my first scans and an angiogram to look at themselves.
