What does it mean when my semen is brown? Is this serious?

Posted by andrewet77 @andrewet77, Mar 6, 2023

I am a 77 year old male...my last ejaculation was brown in Color.
What does this mean? How serious is this. I am in the process of making an appointment with my primary care provider however the earliest that I can see him is March 29. Also, I had this same problem about 1 month ago and did nothing at that time.

Thank you.

Hello @andrewet77, Welcome to Connect. It's understandable that you are concerned and I think it's a good idea that you are setting up an appointment with your primary care provider. From what I have read there can be more than one cause. While we wait for other members that may have had a similar experience, I thought I would share this article on what the different colors mean and possible causes.

Can you let us know what you find out after your appointment?

I noticed the same thing and saw a urologist about it. Also had some chronic pain in left testicle. He told me to not be concerned about it, but still had my PSA checked and did an ultrasound. My PSA was high which led to a biopsy. That turned out positive for cancer. I can’t help to think the two are related, the brown semen and the cancer. I would suggest you see a urologist.

Hi Everyone. I (23M) have been facing issues related to urination for the past one week. It all started when my girlfriend grinded a little too hard on my penis. I sometimes feel sensation while peeing and the tip becomes a little sensitive. Also while ejaculating, I had some brown liquid in my semen. My urine is completely fine. Some days my urination becomes normal and some days it’s more frequent. I had a normal urine test and it didn’t have anything. This happened about a year ago as well. Doctors gave me antibiotics thinking it was UTI but my reports were completely normal. Can this go away on its own? Could this be due to an internal injury I don’t think it’s an STD because I got it tested last time as well and everything came out to be negative

About week ago I noticed a pinkish red color in my semen, a few days later it had brown. Just today it was brown again. The tip of my penis stings a little after ejaculating but otherwise no pain, and my urine is normal. Can anyone give some insight or advice?

I had brownish semen for about 2 months after I had a prostate bioposy. They told me the brown would be the dried blood from that coming from the prostate. If you have not had any procedure that might cause that, I would certainly set up a visit with my Urologist to make sure what is causing it. I always like to side on the caution side when anything strange happens with my body.

Sounds like prostatitis or BPH

You may have hematospermia. Blood in ejaculate (sperm). First thing that has to be ruled out is prostate cancer or anything going on with vas deferens or testicles. Can be due to prostate infection as well. See a Urologist not just Primary Doctor.

May also research candidiasis and prostatitis.
