Posted by roseydia @roseydia, May 27, 2025

My brother suffers from skin cancer and after doing chemotherapy for 2 circles, a growth came out at the back of his ears, and it was said to be erratic, he did chemotherapy again and after that radiotherapy, but now he is experiencing shock, and finding it hard to breath, please it's the breathing part for me, the doctor said his saturation are okay but what should he do? Is it a side effect or what?

Hi @roseydia and welcome to the Head and Neck group. I will link a discussion from a while back on the many side effects of radiation. In the meantime, "finding it hard to breath" indicates to me a common issue with radiation, that being a bruise or damage to the Thyroid gland, which is located at the base of the neck. If the thyroid gets damaged, one's chemical levels get out of wack and difficulty to breath is often a result. It feels like a sack of potatoes on your chest. My advice, from one patient to another, get his TSH, Free T3 &T4 levels checked. It's a simple blood test. If that is not the issue, at least it is a good start.

He should be talking with his Primary doctor or the oncologist about his issues right away.

Yes, my thyroid was damaged from 2 rounds of radiation and I now take daily meds which help. I've been on Libtayo immunotherapy for SCC a year now and had a recent ablation to cancer cells in my lymph node which was successful in killing cancer within that node. Also you might ask for the Signatera test to help track cell measures.
