Weird Covid Symptom: peripheral flashes of light

Posted by jwatzig @jwatzig, Aug 11, 2021

Hello, after ten days of bad Covid, I started seeing light flashes and light balls off the side of my head. Day and night. Very scary. Anyone else hear of this??

Hi, 3 month ego, on October 2022 I had covid, and 8 days later until now, I am seeing moving ‘ *balls of light’* *flashes* in the peripheral of both eyes, every hour or so all day long, even when my eyes closed.
I consulted different specialist doctors from different medicine aspects – Neurologist, Ophthalmologist and Neuro ophthalmology. I did MRI, MRA, MRV, EEG, PET CT. the results show that there is no problem.
does someone know the connection between covid 19 to
balls eye flashes ( and it is not floters)?

Hello,
I have seen multiple specialist and been to Mayo in Florida and Rochester. No answers to the light shapes that move in my peripheral vision. Actually, just happened as I am typing this.
I have not been back to this site in a long time and am surprised all the people that have responded. Its been 1 year and 4 months since Covid and still struggling with things, and these dam light shapes that travel by. Take care, and good luck.

Yep! Balls of light in my peripherial (sp.) vision, like seeing the sun. Quite scary. Several times every day.
However, this was not from Covid, I've never had that. It was a precourser to a serious and rare brain problem called Autoimmune Encephalitis. I was hospitalized for weeks, and am still getting medical treatment for this. It is not a mental issue, but a physical brain problem.
The balls of light thankfully have ceased. The neurologist could not explain this problem.

Hello,
I am still seeing these moving light shapes in my vision. How did they find your rare brain issue?

Hi Jeff---- I had, maybe still have Autoimmune Encephalitis, a nasty inflammation of the brain. It was POSSIBLY due to a serious kidney infection which entered the blood stream & traveled to my brain.
Many odd side effects, and I am still having a few left over from a year ago.
The visual light was only there before I went to the hospital. It was in my perephial (sp.) vision, did not move
and was sort of like an orange-sized ball of bright yellow light. It only lasted a minute or a few seconds. The
neurologists had no idea of its origin.
I am lucky that I have never had Covid, and hope you get rid of such a terrible disease.

I have the peripheral flashes. Started as red circular images bilaterally, evolved into more linear BRIGHT white flashes. I also see waves when near change in temperature, both into heat or cold. Sometimes I see pins of light, sort of pixilated, vision. My Neuro-Ophthalmologist said this is similar to “visual snow” (google it) and she sees long covid patients with this all the time. She said it is a symptom of significant inflammation of the brain and up-regululation (extremely more sensitive) optical neuro pathways. She recommended CoQ-10 100mg 3 times a day, Riboflavin (vit B2) 400mg at night, and Magnesium Glycinate 200mg twice a day because these are anti-inflammatory for the brain. I am taking these and still have some flashes, but less so. I have no headaches and never had migraines. This doctor impressed me in a sea of disappointing specialists. Dr. Chen. UW-Madison.

wow, I am 90 min from there.
I dont have visual snow, only light shapes that travel in my peripheral vision.
started out as round shapes but have changed to any shape. If I am standing next to a wall, I see them traveling across the wall, very freaky. Sometimes, a shape will split into two, and travel away in different directions. Anyway, thanks for the info, I will probably look up this Dr. Chen.

Hi Jef, They dont know how to explain the light balls ,  they dont know if or how to chek if its  a side effect from the covid. they want to check if its epilepsy , and I'm going to do another EEG to check it up.  if the EEG won't find anything,  they will still  suggest that I  will  try to take pills for epilepsy to see if it will help to reduce this symptom.
since no one really know what is the root cause , i'm not sure that i want to take those pills, because they have theitr own side effects and
risks.

what kind of medical examinations you did?
what the doctors said about the connection to covid ?

Hi Jeff, I would like to speak with you on Zoom about the light flashes. I need to ask you some medical questions about them in order to understand the phenomenon . My husband can help me with my English during the conversation, if it is OK. I wil send you my email adress.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Rosemary,
Thanks so much for this info. It's been freaking me out the last couple days.
No, the flashes/light balls are more off to the side of my head. Kinda like a clyediscope effect. (Probably spelled that wrong) I just messaged my PCP. Thanks
Jeff

The kaleidoscope effect sounds very like migraine aura. I hope your doctor was able to diagnose or reassure you. It’s possible to get aura without headache pain.
However, I’ve had Covid for 14 days now and have also experienced light flashes in the periphery of my vision. I do suffer migraines, so perhaps Covid can trigger this in people with head injury or neurological issues. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing this helpful information. The coenzyme Q-10 and magnesium glycinate supplements are also recommended for brain inflammation due to the Covid vaccines. The riboflavin is a photosensitizer that is excited by blue light. It may be a good idea to wear blue blocker sunglasses when outdoors or exposed to high intensity indoor lighting. Even though you are taking the supplement at night, your blood and tissue levels are increasing.
