Anyone else experience Weight Gain with long COVID?

Posted by RMS @rinadbq, Oct 8, 2021

I have had ~30 pound weight gain since November 2020 when I initially had COVID. It seems disproportionate to my calorie intake. Any one else with this?

Yes!!! I have been researching for a month now. Had covid in Feb of 2020. No vaccines. I am a healthy 56 year old that was was in amazing shape and ideal weight when I got it. My labs are A+, I don't eat a lot due to Parosmia and I am very active. The weight gain makes no sense. I have been diagnosed with long covid, and currently Thrush has been the ongoing battle. My doctors keep telling me to eat healthy but I do, they are not listening. I found this forum through my internet search. If anyone has any clinical research they want to share, or have found something that has helped, please connect with me here.

I would suggest looking at complex carbohydrates, like sugars and starches, for elimination. Also, another big inflammation problem is seed oils, such as canola, margarine, flaxseed, sunflower seed, etc. You might consider going keto, or at least low-carb, for a while to see if that works.

I've read a couple of studies on this. Basically, if you were prone to metabolic disease before COVID, it will activate it. Unfortunately, I'm not a medical professional (nor do I play one on TV), so I can't really interpret the science as much as a doctor can.

Well this is what my doctor suggests and I bet many others, the thing is we are not eating them. At least I am not. Mostly a clean diet with minimal complex carbs, sugars, etc. Our diet is not the issue it has to be something more.

I got sick with Long Covid on July 22nd of this year. I gained 6 pounds since then. My normal weight is 178 lbs. That's a sympton of Long Covid. What other symptons do you have?

Hello, I had Covid on 12/2020 I had kept the same weight even lost some during isolation but suddenly, a month after Covid I gained almost 30lbs and my doctor said it was due to my diet which was mainly based on plants and some protein due to parosmia. After that lost some of the weight, but I got covid again on 12/2021 and got another 22 lbs No one can seem to tell me how or what to do. My nutriologist said it was non-related to covid but it was the only thing that changed I went from 120 lbs on 2020 to 158 lbs, and now nothing seems to be working to lose weight. My bloodwork was normal.

Hi. I tested positive for Covid in Feb 2020. I’ve been dealing with all the long haul symptoms but on top of it have also gained over 50 pounds. In the past if I stopped soda I would lose weight. I haven’t had a soda since Covid. I’m not active now but I’m not eating as much. I even focused on keto for two weeks and nothing. I can’t lose a pound. I’m wondering since Covid is like an inflammation disease if it has something to do with that. Does anyone else have high or elevated CRP levels plus weight gain. My crp levels were normal at the beginning of Covid and now is 2.2. My feet and legs are swollen since Covid and the pain has been unbearable until the last 6 weeks. I started hydroxychloroquine. My long haul Covid symptoms mimic lupus so I thought I have nothing to lose. It took about 4 months to before it started working. I’m happy to not have this awful pain but still have the bad fatigue and all this extra weight.

Was very ill with covid and lasted a whole 10 days --fever etc. I lost 11 pouds in that time and now that am fairly getting over it have started to gain. I am in Phase 3 that they call the exhaustion stage. So am not hungry, but do eat. My diet is mostly vegetable concentrating on leafy greens and counting protein grams per day. A dietician I consulted with explained that we as women need 30 to 40 gms protein per day and greens and veg like broccolt and carrots. So she gavee me some protein values of foods and I look up others on the internet. After a week, I stopped gaining weight. HOWEVER if I eat Christmas foods rich in carbs I will gain again. Dietician advice was to keep to the diet of veg, fruit eggs, chicken, fish and lean meat once or twice a week. AND no toast in evening and keep to 2 slices bread a day. Not easy as I do not feel like prepping and cooking. But I continue to try. Caloric intake is at 1500 cal perday for 2 days a week, and 1100 cals for 3 days a week and 1000 cals the rest of the week. Best thing is to consult with your MD and Dietician/Nutritionist. I also have the amonts recommended for vitamins and minerals. I was low in Zinc on a blood report and iron. So I eat mushrooms for zinc and of course the leafy greens, and MD prescribed .to take a multivitamin 3x weekly. Check with your MD as a blood work may show what yor body is in need of.

I had covid during the first week of the New Year. I gained 40lbs in less than 3 months after I had it and have not changed my calorie or water intake at all nor changed my exercise routine. I'm still so stumped and honestly it is making me depressed. I have been experiencing horrid body paid from the weight gain too. I don't know what else to do.

Thank you so much for the posts! My 50 yr old son is experiencing most of these same symptoms. He's had covid 3 times and is now fully vaccinated. He's gained 40 lbs since June all in his abdomen which is hard as a rock. Dr put him on lasix which had provided some relief...maybe 15 lb loss. Next month he goes back snd they will do complete blood panels. Dr didn't seem convinced it was Covid related. But what else could it be? Blood pressure was normal. Blood o2 normal. Lungs clear. No pain (other than discomfort from distention) and back ache. No diet changes. Very active. He's so depressed and we are worried!

Likewise! I'm 51 yrs.old and all my life I was very fit and slim/ perfect figure, very healthy life style, sporting 5 day a week. I have hypothyroidism but that is under very good control. In past 2 years I suffered from truly bad Covid ( long Covid. I had very hard time to regain basic energy level after 1st Covid ( despite all vaccinations) and exactly one year from getting 1st Covid I got ill with 2nd one ( Delta, not Omicron) and ended up in hospital. I felt exhausted 6 months later to the point I had to quit my job. I couldn't function at all. During this time I put on 30 pounds ( to my horror) because my body was able to function only on carbs and not on Keto diet as my GP suggested. I didn't eat 'stupid' carbs but I ate carbs more than meat and veggies as I used to before I got Covid. I'm very unhappy because I don't feel myself and I've been asked several times if I'm expecting baby. I'd love to loose at least some weight but my energy level for holding a job and then exercise like I used to before it's just not the same. I'm very unhappy, stressed and anxious. Can anybody share the similar experience and perhaps any suggestions how to deal with it, PLEASE? I'll be very grateful. Thank you very much.

I am so sorry that you are suffering- I feel the same way.
I went from exercising 2-3 hours a day, working in an intense work environment to days on the couch.
I push myself, eat healthy and see a np, therapist and neurologist regularly.
I am in the process of changing my php.
I am in my mid thirties and do not even recognize myself anymore.
I know this is not forever- but it feels that way.
I am afraid to be alone, now have a service dog and depend much on my husband.
I find that the right healthcare provider is key. I have walked out of many a doctors office. Empathy is key when searching out medical treatment (I find).

Thank you for sharing- I hope things get better. I find the cold weather has also caused me many a setback. Waiting on the sun to come out.
