Wearing bite guard with BE

Posted by vmorton @vmorton, Jan 4 11:56am

I have a problem with grinding my teeth and must wear a night bite guard. My concern is how to clean it to insure I don't get exposed to bacteria. Does anyone else with BE have this problem?

I have the same problem and have a guard. The best way to clean it is with luke warm to warm water and a drop of Dawn or the equivalent and let it air dry. I haven't had a problem with this cleaning method.

I was told by my dentist to use toothpaste to clean it, but I didn't feel that would sanitize it enough. Thank you for the suggestion, which I will now try.

I have a dental partial so I put it in efferdent soak overnight. When I get up the next morning, I drop my night guard in the efferdent solution. Later in the morning I'll take it out, pour hydrogen peroxide over the bite guard, brush it and rinse with bottle water. Hoping that will kill the germs.

The biggest concern is removing any film on the bite guard so the NTM have noting to attach themselves to. Daily cleaning with Efferdent or toothpaste and a thorough brushing of all surfaces should keep anything from growing. If you want to be extra cautious, maybe add an alcohol soak every week or so.
Just a reminder - thorough tooth/denture cleaning and flossing is just as important to keep tartar from forming because all kinds of nasty germs can grow there too - not just NTM, but germs that can cause periodontal disease and other opportunistic infections.

I have been wondering about this, as well as my toothbrush, in terms of how often people sterilize these? Right now, for my night guard, I am mostly relying on Efferdent each morning, following by a UV sterilizing case. But I realize that's probably not enough. These are the (endless) daily hygiene habits not really treated in the medical literature. Thank goodness for the patient community!

I brush the guard with toothpaste, rinse in hot water, then soak and my toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide for at least one hour.
Anyone I’ve seen in the pulmonary office has never mentioned tooth care with me. Anything I should ask my dentist when I go for my yearly checkup?

Hydrogen peroxide is not effective against mycobacteria, so you might ask the dentist if an alcohol soak is safe. I replace my toothbrush head on the first of every even month. Overly cautious? Maybe, but I have far fewer canker sores since I started doing it.

I use Efferdent for my night guard. I then also rinse it in Listerine.

I was told by my dentist not to use efferdent. He said if was too harsh and would break down the bite guard material. I think I will use toothpaste followed by an alcohol rinse.

Hi Sue,
I’m a bit confused. In the pamphlet that comes with the Aerobica, it states that one of the ways to disinfect the device is by soaking it in Hydrogen peroxide for 30 min. Is this incorrect for those of us who have MAC?

Also is it safe to disinfect the Aerobica in a Bololo baby bottle sterilizer?
Thanks
