Hi, I am hoping others are looking for a positive and quick way to quick smoking! I should have done this long ago but here I am! Any comments would be much appreciated! Thank you!

I have totally quit all of my bad habits for over 20 years but smoking stubbornly hung on. Then a few years ago I had major surgery and when I walked out of the hospital I decided not to smoke for that day and I quit for a year and a half. No withdrawal, no anguish, no craving, no problem! Then I got sick again and looking for relief, I smoked a half a cigarette, 5 minutes later I smoked the other half and I was "off to the races"! It took me 8 months to quit again and its been tough! Its been a year now and the cravings are still there but must be lessening. My desire not to smoke has to be greater than my desire to smoke! To keep that going I have to "man up" many times during the day. All I know is I thank God for another nicotine free day and that has to be good enough!

Nicorette gum works for me. COSTCO has their own brand which is less expensive. I believe that Target does also. Some use the patch...make a plan and work it. Success is yours.

I am so happy that I no longer smoke.....do I still think about? Sure. It is abt 4.5 years.

I thank God for my smoking cessation. The cost and never forget the odor on your hair, clothing, etc. Quite gross.

We had just buried my mom after my 3 sisters and I had taken care of her for about 7 months. Our mom and 1 sister lived near each other in one state, the other 3 of us lived in 3 different states. We swapped out weekly staying from Sunday to Sunday. We hired a sitter to come each Sunday morning and stay until the next sister arrived.
Our mother had vascular dementia. It was after burying our mom that I started thinking that I was a smoker and I didn’t want my children to have to take of me or watch me die from a self inflicted disease.
I gave up every habit that went along with my smoking, coffee, Diet Mt Dew. I kept mints on hand and only drank water. I never smoked when I ate a mint or drank water.
I had 3/4 of a pack and I smoked one after another until I couldn’t smoke anymore.
I never smoked another cigarette. I didn’t use a patch or gum. That was 10 years ago this past April.
I hope you are able to quit !

@mfv, good for you. It's never too late to quit and it seems like now is the right time for you. There are many approaches to successfully quite smoking. For some a gradual decrease helps, especially with aids like nicotine patches or quit medications. Others find cold turkey works for them.

But one thing that helps many people is to have others to support you along the way. So, I'm tagging fellow members who have quit to join you on your quit journey. Members like @mcmurf2 @merpreb @iandunlop @bluelagoon @marylou705 @frane1939 and more can share their quit stories, inspirations and motivations. Together, you got this.

MFV, what or who is your motivation to quit?

Thanks for the post I am trying to quit as well and I have the spray and gum to help with the cravings, so far I have really cut back but it is that first smoke in the morning with coffee that is the toughest.

I quit 20 years ago after smoking for 30 years. Cut back gradually then doc prescribed a nicotine divide imI would hit when I wanted a smoke . I quit in two weeks after nearly two packs a day since age 16. I put on some weight at first but eventually got back to normal. Feel so much better without cigs. Don’t even miss them.

As with any addiction a person has to be "entirely ready to quit. That sounds like it might be easy but it is not-you have to be sure, with absolutely no reservations what so ever. Sounds simple, but sometimes it hard to know. It comes down to the fact that your desire to quit smoking has to be greater than your desire to smoke! I had a hell of a time, but I did quit smoking and no matter how much I want to smoke at times I just don't. I also don't want to give up over a year of being clean from that terrible habit! I know, at this point anyway, that just one puff and I'm off those the never ending races again!

After 40 years of three packs per day my aneurysm convinced me to stop.
Hypnotist recommended I buy the most disgusting brand to me (Salems), go to my favorite place to smoke and do the whole pack in one hour With two cigarettes left I have not had an urge to smoke again, not even a single cigarette Six years ago
The practioner taught me how to stop reaching for lighter and packs
