Looking for tips to stop estradiol cream

Posted by kathym653 @kathym653, Jun 27 11:53am

I am 72, had a total hysterectomy over 20 years ago. Took Premarin for (about) 8 years to get me through menopause. A few years ago I was diagnosed with vaginal atrophy, dryness, burning, itching, pain. Was prescribed Estradiol vaginal cream, using 1 gm 3x weekly with success. I've tried to taper off (worried about the estrogen) but the symptoms return. I haven't had a gyn exam for a few years either. I know I'm way overdue but my husband has cancer and it's taken up most of my spare time. Has anyone else been able to successfully stop the cream without rebounding?

No. I tried estrogen cream. I had to stop it because it interacts with one of my other prescriptions. I live with vaginal atrophy discomfort. I use coconut oil. I just had a pap and pelvic. No cancerous cells.

I’ve been on estrogen cream for a few years. It helps so much that I would not want to get off of it. My understanding is that it doesn’t pose the cancer risk that oral estrogen does.

@kathym63. I was prescribed estradiol vaginal cream in the past. It worked well. I stopped using it at the recommendation of my oncology surgeon after I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer (endometroid adenocarcinoma). Although vaginal estrogen does not have the risk of oral estrogen I suppose my oncology surgeon figured why take the chance? I had no difficulty stopping estradiol. I transitioned to a non-hormonal vaginal moisturizer. There are many different kinds that are over-the-counter.

This is a good conversation to have with your prescribing doctor. I understand the commitment to being the caregiver for your husband however it’s important to take care of yourself too. How about calling on Monday and making an appointment with your doctor?

You need to take care of yourself. If something happens to you who would take care of your husband. Don’t neglect your health. Or you could talk to your family doctor
I was on Premarin for years. I complained about this side effect for years because it comes from pregnant horse urine. Then the big warning came out that it wasn’t safe for some people, and I was told to stop it at once. I was OK stopping out, but I would talk to your doctor
I wish you, your husband and your family the best as you go through these stressful days
Take care of yourself

Estradiol cream was my savior and what I did when symptoms went away was taper off gradually. If symptoms came back I just start up again using it sparingly every other day. Now the times when I don’t need it are longer and longer so it’s just a matter of adjusting.

I would be very hesitant to stop using it. It doesn’t cause cancer. As someone said, you could taper off and resume if symptoms return.
I’ll be using it from now on and will go to my gyn annually as well.

It definitely does not cause the complications that oral estrogen might cause. Neither does the patch. The patch should be started sooner but cream at any time.

I’m 71, use it twice a week. Maybe you can start tapering off to twice instead of 3 times a week

I use a mild compounded estradiol cream daily, and have for over 15 years. I started it after 4 years of menopause because my symptoms were gettng worse, not better. I intend to use it for the rest of my life. I reduced the dose by 1/3 about a year ago, with no negative side effects. There are distinct advantages to having some estrogen in our bodies, particularly cardiovascular. Take good care of yourself and your husband, Kathym.

Hi there, if you have vaginal atrophy( I have it too) it does not go away as we age, in fact without treatment it will worsen. The estrogen cream keeps it at bay. If you stop you may feel ok for a bit but I assure you the burning, dryness, itching, soreness will come back. There are some newer alternatives to the estrogen, one is Intrarosa…works differently and not a hormone. I may try it eventually. Best of luck, it’s not easy to deal with it. Not fair is it!
