Vulvovaginal Disorders at Mayo Clinic

Is there a doctor at Mayo who specializes in rare vulvolvaginal disorders?

PT for pelvic floor therapy is very good suggestion. Depending on how involved your prolapse is - it might require more. There are surgeries, generally done by gynecologists with surgical experience, Anterior Repair is for supporting a sagging bladder that is putting pressure on the pelvic area, and Posterior Repair when the rectum lining is protracted and pushing on the vaginal canal and/or pelvic area. I needed a posterior repair at age 55 because of the extra long episiotomy cut made to my perineum during natural childbirth (when I was 27). Not sure if it was sewn up wrong or if the cut went through the muscle near the perineum. The rest of that story, if you’re interested, is that my baby’s heart rate started to slow during birth and it was decided to use foreceps and they made a cut large enough for the forceps and to get the baby out quickly. My son was just fine. I didn’t realize that I might have problems later - but that is what caused the prolapse and the pressure on the pelvic area.
It’s best to have a doctor evaluate it. I saw a colorectal surgeon as was needed before having my first colonoscopy. He told me about the problem but said the gynecologist is the one who does the surgical repair. Sorry if this is TMI - but hopefully it is helpful to someone.

As a review of my comments over the past few years will show, I did good quality physical therapy to strengthen the pelvic floor, and I used a pessary for awhile, with one change in size. These remedies worked for awhile, but ultimately they were not sufficient for my prolapse. My vagina was bulging outside of my body, which caused episodes of incontinence and irritation of the vaginal tissue. I chose the colpocleisis surgery because there had been problems with the mesh used in reconstructive surgery, causing some women to get infections and even die.
