Vocal cord dysfunction anyone have this?

I have used two types of good bronchodilator’s, several rescue meds and hospital breathing treatments. Nothing opens me up so I can breathe. It’s been exhausting and disappointing. I ran across this disorder and wondering if this is the reason. I’ve had a phobia of taking any medication for years but made myself do this anyway. I have very high anxiety as well. This at least makes sense to me that I could be doing this subconsciously. My doctor already thinks I’m odd so not sure what he will say once I spring this on him. I was just wondering if anyone had this and how to help myself. My breathing is so bad I’m desperate for some relief.

I haven't heard of this but my voice does get scratchy sometimes. I think it's because of the inhalers. If you're Dr. thinks you're odd, maybe it's time for a new Dr.! COPD is nasty and I've found none of my Drs. anything but understanding.

@tcarson52 I don't think you are odd! I was recently diagnosed with Vocal Chord Dysfunction by my pulmonologist, who sent me to an ENT and a Speech Therapist. Based on what I learned from them, I have had this since childhood and Asthma, Bronchiectasis, infections, nebulizers and inhalers have all contributed. I suggest you see an ENT for an evaluation. The speech Therapist is working with me on breathing exercises and breath control.

Have you been diagnosed with asthma, COPD or another lung disorder? And has your heart function been checked?

Hi. I would ask for a reduced barium swallow (quite non-invasive and usually done with speech/language pathologists, who can also work on VCD issues) to see if you have any swallowing obstructions leading to your swallowing anxiety. The good thing is, therapies are accessible for VCD and usually require essentially physical therapy for the throat area and not procedures. I have asthma, VCD (diagnosed about 25 years ago), some swallowing impediments, plus anxiety (no wonder!), and now Bronchiectasis. It can be a real minefield navigating “what’s what”!

Inhaled steroids always give me scratchy, tight throat.
