Visit Followup Questionnaires

Posted by bajjerfan @bajjerfan, 4 days ago

Anyone find those post visit questionairres to be a nuisance? Most of the questions seem irrelevant to the visit. I suppose if I ignore the requests long enough they'll quit asking. If one has multiple appts in one day how does one sort it out? I've yet to have a bad experience.

Mine usually ask about a specific doctor even when I've seen more than one in a day.

@sandy8043

Mine do too, but usually staff are pretty good but nothing overall extraordinary about the visit. I don't see the value in such a survey; just my thoughts.

@bajjerfan: I've been a patient at Mayo where I've been treated by various specialties over the past couple of years. I've had several office visits, hospitalizations and procedures. I answer the surveys sent afterwards without fail as I feel they provide a tremendous service to the organization. Why? I think it's important for the institution to understand the patient's perspective especially in terms of where some quality improvement may be needed and to see if this is a general trend, such as are wait times excessive? Does communication need to be improved? are instuctions confusing/conflicting? This feedback can help identify what and where changes may need to be instituted and improved. Converseley, when positive feedback is provided it helps to reinforce what procedures are working well and can give much needed praise to identified personnel.

It may just be one person's response when we submit our individual questionairres, but when taken as part of thousands of those who do take the time to reply, this provides very helpful information to help improve the patient experience - which is a goal at Mayo, and hopefully at other facilities providing patient care.

It's great you've yet to have a negative outcome - I hope that continues and I think it's in part because of people like you who do submit that positive feedback! Does this help to encourage you to continue to do so? Hope so!

@grammato3 I had an experience at Mayo last year that was not positive although I have had a number of really good experiences there. They send me the survey after the first visit, and even though I know it’s confidential, I had to see this provider several more times, so didn’t fill it out. I would have liked the survey at the end.

@grammato3

Maybe next time if I remember I'll iclude a comment about adding a choice of NA not applicable. Also more clocks visible from the waiting area. I often arrive early so appt wait times don't matter or if being later come out and let patient know.

@bajjerfan: I think that's a great suggestion about more clocks in the specified area in which you were waiting! And if there isn't a place that allows for N/A it definitely would help to have it included. That's the type of feedback that truly could help effect change, it does depend on people like you to offer it up.

As for @backhand's concern above about confidentiality, Mayo's Patient Satisfaction Surveys - of which thousands are sent daily - do abide by their strict confidentiality policy, as outlined here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/confidentiality

By all means, if you have a less than satisfactory experience, even more reason to share that. I've actually given direct feedback to providers where I've felt my patient care has been less than optimal - noting that it's vital for me to have confidence in my health care team and that I'm offering my experience as a means of quality improvement for staff and other prospective patients; that if they feel my concerns lack merit to please provide their perspective. This type of communication is vital when it comes to being a client of any service, particularly where health is involved. This type of feedback allows the provider of services to investigate, intervene and provide corrections before any situation has the potential to decline.

Do you feel more confident with submitting an honest response going forward? I for one would be grateful for it!

@grammato3

Have you ever felt the need to connect with your doctor more directly though the message system? Of course a staff member will see it first.

@grammato3 unfortunately, my issue was with the provider, the rest of the staff was great, Both my partner and I had concerns about him. Although he wanted to follow me, I declined , thanked him and went on my way. As an older male (near 70) he did not appear to be receptive to feedback. I have a great resource in another fairly nearby city, I had gone to him for a second opinion.

@backhand: Pardon me for including an answer to this in my response to @bajjerfan below as I had an appointment to tend to and wanted to get to both concerns. Allow me to follow up directly with you now.

@bajjerfan: Absolutely! I treat with several providers/specialists at Mayo so have had frequent need to ask, clarify or coordinate concerns regarding my care. You are correct that most times it's their "gate keeper" staff, usually an RN, who provides direction, oftentimes after receiving input from the provider themselves. I usually get answers within a couple of days.

Have you attempted to use the portal or are you reluctant to do so for any reason?
