Vagus Nerve Effect on Heartbeat
Does anyone with tachycardia (fast heart beat) find that it occurs mostly at night while laying down? Also, immediately after the fast beat awakens me, both legs cramp and become a bit spastic. Numerous heart and neurological tests come out okay, so now I wonder if some of the issues are really the result of the Vagus nerve and if others have found this to be so for their situation. Thanks

This may sound quite simple. Arrhythmias and muscle spasms may also occur because of dehydration and an imbalance of electrolytes. Have you had your magnesium tested?
The vagus nerve certainly does affect AFib. Early in my AFib experience, I complained to my GP about how my "position" seemed to be a trigger for AFib. He said that was "not a thing". I believe it was only a misunderstanding between us. I might have talked more about how when I do something to "pinch" against or to put "pressure" on the cranial nerve X it seems to affect my AFib. In my experience, my night AFib likely came from over exertion during the day, but it is also possible that my sleep-time positioning might have been the cause. After a PF ablation last February, it is all fixed now. So "position" is no longer a problem for me.
I am a 86 year old woman who also has tachycardia and leg cramps. I know the former is caused by vagus nerve damage, which happened during ablation for AFib two years ago. That also produced chronic low blood pressure that I have to take Midodrine for to keep from fainting. I am unsure about the cause of the leg cramps, but they did not start until after the vagus nerve damage. I also now get frequent migraine headaches that I had been free of since puberty. Perhaps these symptoms are all connected?
@gloaming
I will celebrate your success. I will keep on keeping on till I have exhausted the options.
Best to you,

I believe you might have misread the sentence. I believe gloaming said he was "inexpert" not "an expert".

Thanks for taking the time to reply. When I go to the "sleep doctor" next week, I will ask about settings. When I was given the ResMed, I was told not to touch the settings because the doctor had it all set up. I will now explore what I can do to make a better result. I hated the high pressure because it "exploded my mouth open...normally not a mouth breather.
Cheers,
Dana
I am suffering the same problems without the tachycardia. The leg cramps are eased with Theraworx Foam
which stops the severe cramping immediately. I also take Hylands Leg Cramps pills under my tongue when
I am awakened with severe spasms and leg cramp pain.
I believe it is related to the Vegas Nerve. The Neurologist says the only other thing besides regular physical therapy, plus home exercises 2 x daily and 3 to 5 miles walking daily, that may help, is surgery.
I am not wanting to do that. I exercise religiously, it helps with leg cramps.
I have Neuropathy, Venous Insufficiency, Varicose veins and arthritis which add to the complications with pain.
I don't think surgery or laser actually helps to reduce pain, no doctor could promise that.
So, I continue with therapy and home medications.
I prop two pillows under my knees at night. I usually get up two times a night and walk to get the muscles
relaxed. Sometimes I move to my Eames Chair with Foot Rest and pillows behind back and head to sleep
the rest of the night. Hope this helps. What do you do to relieve the pain?
@amberamberette Hugs are the very best medicine!
@amberamberette I used to get these very intense pain in my lower leg muscle. I believe it was from a statin and when I was changes from Simvastatin to Atorvastatin it got much better. But the way of stopping them for me as they always happen while lying down was to put wait on the leg and just stand up and it stopped the sharp pain. Now i think its only happen maybe twice since I switched many years ago.
@danab
Thank you for your information. How does the Atorvastatin affect you physically besides the fact that a different Statin is beneficial to the sharp leg pain? Do you take it exclusively for the leg pain?
I use Theraworx when pain awakens me, also, I disolve 2 leg cramp pills under my tongue which helps.
I, too, get the pain always when lying down on my back which is the only way I can sleep
due to the Vegus Nerve pain going down the L leg.
I jump straight up out of bed when it happens.
Sometimes I sleep the rest of the night in a chair with leg rest which is actually more comfortable with no pain. But it is not good to sleep sitting up all night!
Do you go to a Physical Therapist? I have been seeing one regularly since May this year.
I choose to exercise and thus far have avoided drugs. I also walk 30 - 50 blocks daily.
Do you have complications with Venous Insufficiency? Varicose Veins? Neuropathy?
I am trying to determine whether all these diagnoses together are causing my pain, or if
it is the nerve alone. The Neurologist thinks it is the nerve being pinched by a lower disc.
I do NOT want to do surgery.
At the suggestion of the Neurologist, I take 2,000 mg. Quanol Tumeric daily which helps alot.
It would be great to hear how you are progressing on the different Statin.
