Use of Botox to combat pelvic floor pain.

Posted by kenc @kenc, Sep 23, 2023

Has anyone had experience using BOTOX to treat pelvic floor and rectal area pain? The pain is resulting from the Colorectal surgery I had a few years back, and the Pelvic Floor doctor recommends that, along w/ PT, I should receive BOTOX injections to loosen the muscle strain in my pelvic floor, which result in pain relief.

Good morning,
I have not had any experience with Botox for pelvic pain, but an very curious. I wasn’t even aware there was a Dr. that treats pelvic pain.
I’m hoping you get someone that has tried it to give you some answers.

I've heard it used but don't know results. My only healing came from Topamax, an anti-seizure drug I took off-label for a persistent headache. In 2 weeks the pain was gone after 14 years sitting on a donut. Side effects were nasty but it was worth it.

I'll keep this is mind. What are the side effects you experienced?

Thx. This is a common side effect for many pain killers.

It is an anti-seizure medicine which makes sense as pelvic pain is kinda like a spasm or seizure, right? My pelvic doctor told me she had heard of it a year after I told her about it.

I am seeing a Pelvic Floor Doctor who specializes in pelvic area injuries and diseases.

I’ve been experiencing same pain for past two years. Horrible! I’ve been to numerous doctors seeking solutions during this time. Pelvic floor therapy to help release tension in muscles can help. I’ve been using a compounded cream consisting of gamapentin, amitriptyline and baclofen that a doctor has to prescribe through a specialty pharmacy. I’ve found some yoga videos on UTube by Dr Bri that are helpful for relaxing the pelvic floor. I saw a pelvic pain specialist at Cleveland Clinic who prescribed oral gabapentin but I haven’t tried it yet. She also wants to try Botox. I have also done a pudental nerve block which did confirm at least some of my pain is originating from that nerve. I also always sit on a donut type pillow in the car. I also use a pelvic wand at home which helps between my therapy sessions. I hope some of this may help you. It truly is a terrible pain to live with. I wish you well.

I’m so sorry you are going through this and hope you find some relief. I have always thought I had a high pain tolerance but you are absolutely right, it’s horrible!
May I ask, did you have a hysterectomy that started this?
Unfortunately we live in a very small town and my options are very limited.
Thank you so much for your suggestions! I so appreciate them!!

No. I’ve had issues with constipation my entire life. Four years ago it went into overdrive! Two years into this period is when mine started. They feel this is what caused mine. I also live in a small town. I have to travel for everything. An hour every week for pelvic floor therapy. Nearly four hours to Cleveland Clinic. Of course, all the sitting only makes it works!
