Updated information on blood tests?

Posted by jeindc @jeindc, Apr 10 2:34pm

With a google alert for "Long COVID", I spend time reading of research being done. I checked this group for other posts and did find some from 2022 about blood tests. IF there is more current, that is, 2024, information on what to ask to have one's blood tested for long COVID, do tell or direct me/us. And is it a blood test that is possible to be done in most settings or is it so specific that only certain clinics can do so?

Thanks.

@jeindc, I did see these 2024 research articles on the topic.

"New research published Thursday in Science has identified proteins present in the blood of people with long Covid that could point the way to a much-needed diagnostic test and possibly to future therapeutic targets.

--- Could long Covid’s signs of immune dysregulation in the blood lead to a diagnostic test?

"What are the inflammatory markers for long COVID patients?
Elevated markers of myeloid inflammation and complement activation were associated with long COVID. IL-1R2, MATN2 and COLEC12 were associated with cardiorespiratory symptoms, fatigue and anxiety/depression; MATN2, CSF3 and C1QA were elevated in gastrointestinal symptoms and C1QA was elevated in cognitive impairment."

Hello @johnbishop. Thank you for this information.

How can I find the CPT/Procedure codes for the inflammatory markers? If my primary doctor is not familiar with the tests, I would like to share the information but arrive prepared and informed. Thank you.

Hello @mianbri, Welcome to Connect. Unfortunately I don't know what the CPT/Procedure codes are for the tests in the articles. I think you have to get the codes from the laboratory or health provider doing the tests. Mayo Clinic does have a list of all of their CPT codes but you have to download it in spreadsheet format which I don't think is usable for most folks - https://www.mayocliniclabs.com/test-notifications/test-updates.php.

Thank you. No, I have not but I have friends who have been, and I am working on helping them connect with long covid clinics. I find your information useful to share and am trying to do the research to assist them with their journey. Not only do some suffer with inflammation, but another also suffers with asthma that was not diagnosed until after Covid. I truly believe more people suffer from long covid, but they are not aware of the common symptoms.

Adding to the discussion is this article from Science that I found helpful. Too, others' experiences are like mine - PCPs and specialists are dismissing symptoms that occurred only after one had COVID. After "outing" myself on social media and posting this article, the number of colleagues and friends going through this, with different-than-mine symptoms and some with a few similar mentioned in this group, commented. The frustration is great to be so easily dismissed when there are an estimated 17M of us just in the US. (Sen. Bernie Sanders did introduce a bill for a "Moon Shot" like approach to long COVID. So glad he takes us seriously. Alas, when I searched for news of the bill, most media is not covering it. Tell your local and other news/media outlets to make a deal of it.) https://www.science.org/content/article/long-covid-trials-aim-clear-lingering-virus-help-patients-need
