Unknown Body Odor

Posted by Deprest @deprest, Jan 4, 2012

I need help! I've got a bad odor coming from my body, that I can't smell. Yes it's hard to explain. Doctors think I'm making it up. In public people avoid closeness, coughing, holding their noses, avoiding me at all cost. I'm a prisoner in my home. Don't venture out unless low on food and pick times to do it. I'm constantly shamed.im healthy, clean. Homes clean, I can't explain. Have spent last two yrs going to every type doctor to no avail. My family can't smell it either. Has anyone heard of this?

But i cannot drink any caffeine or drink alcohol...if i do i will stink for 24 to 48 hours. And this is with showering...the bo will go past the soaps and deodorants!! It is a nightmare. Please let me know how you are doing.. My name is Sean

I am no Dr, but it sounds like it might be the food you eat, which would kinda explain why your family doesn't notice. Garlic and alcohol are notorious culprits. They just seems to come out of our pores when inject them. Anyway, check your diet and your drinking. Otherwise, I'm stumped and have never heard of this.

I knew the sweetest nun with TMAU. The first time me and my kids met her she immediately explained it to them. She also gave them choices about how they could cope with the smell. She could light a candle ,open a window, etc. She made it about them . I've never met anyone else offer suggestions to others about how to deal with a disease they have the way she did. She said when she first noticed the odor and saw other people could smell it she was devestated. She went on to become a teacher and a nun. She was also the greatest advocate and educator. She still got depressed from time to time. She never quit!! The most amazing woman!!

Hi , I’m new here and have joined to find answers and support while offering the same back. I think I have Trimethylaminuria as well. It started at least 6 months ago.
While doing a lot of research I found limiting foods high in choline such as red meat, pork and sea fish helps in combating the odor. This is not a recommendation from me, its just what I personally tried and found helpful.
Theres lots of information online showing studies done on why this happens but few MDs actually know anything about it. Im trying to find a Dr who will test me for it, saw mine a few times and she knows nothing about it and suggested I seek out research clinics.

TMAU Is a condition caused by a faulty Enzyme called FMO3 in the gut, which is suppose to break down trimethylaminuria so it doesn’t cause body odor. Some are born with this issue while others have it later in life. Thats called secondary TMAU. You can google this and find more information.

Hi Deprest this is Jackie again, I also agree with you about keeping yourself clean and fresh. Ive had this embarrassing condition all my life and just recently found out I have TMAU.You can take a "hundred" showers a day and be squeaky clean....and you will at times smell like high heaven. We are missing a vital component in our bodies. This component, which I forgot the name of is listed when you look up the site concerning TMAU. Anyway, this vital component is what stops the strong odors from coming thru our breath and skin or pores....Sometimes the odor can be so strong that others can smell you from across a room!....the typical hand over the nose, a glaring look, the backing away from you or cutting the conversation short as well as other dead giveaways let you know that people can smell you. Deprest what gives me peace and contentment with myself is a close relationship with God and a lot of prayer. I learned from an examination from the Bible that terrible chronic conditions like ours will a things of past one day soon......Isaiah 33:24.....that verse keeps me focused on the real important things in life. It gives me a hope for the future. Until then I keep myself busy with doing volunteer work that helps other deal with the "critical times" we are living in. Remember Deprest GOD promises to be there for those of us who are crushed at heart and bowed low because of this terrible condition call TRIMETHYLAMINURIA. Isaiah 41:10,13...

Actually not eating Red meat, pork, beans, seafood, liver, full fat dairy, u can have low fat. Cheese made with animal rennet is out, use cheese made with plant based rennet. A good one is Tillamook uses all plant based rennet.
Taking 200 mg of chlorophyll helps eliminate the odor. Empty out your bowels everyday helps transport the odor out faster.
I have experimented with what works and this does. Check out the internet for a full list of food highest with choline . Thats whats not being broken down in your gut.
Hope to find a dr who can test me, having this has been difficult.

A good licensed naturopathic physician might do the job. This is their speciality I believe.

Please try gluten free diet for at least 6 months. Gluten is a culprit which damages the intestine tissues and can result in many related symptoms. I have suffered with this for 8+ years i know how it feels (had been through severe depression), and now 100% odor free since 4 years after going gluten free. Came back to post on a forum so it helps everyone. Don't give up there is solution 🙂 I have read every forum tried all deodrant and medications, been to every doctor and have been falsely diagnosed with IBS, Hemorrhoids , done Colonscopy and tons of other blood test which were normal, celiac test also came out negative but i was gluten free for a year and did test to confirm if it was celiac.

Go gluten free and you will find cure, reduce stress if possible relocate to new place change your environment.

If you've got time read these books

Hello! I struggle with same exact problem as you. Would you be available to talk about it some more with me? I would really appreciate it. I have no one to talk to about my problem.

After covid I at first had a smell of something burning. My husband never smelled it but thought the house was on fire one night! After several months of that got an awful smell and can't really relate it to anything I've never smelled before! I especially notice it when I work out and sweat but husband thinks I'm crazy because he never smells it either. I had covid 2 years ago July and it finally seemed to go away a few months ago but just started to come back!!
