Unexplained nausea

Posted by srsmith3802 @srsmith3802, Nov 15, 2023

I have been tolerating the Big 3 for almost a year. I have had negative AFB sputum cultures since March. Over the last few weeks, I started experiencing nausea. It was intermittent at first , but now it’s daily. I’ve tried peppermints, ginger ale, even Zofran, without relief. I don’t have any history of reflux/GERD, but have tried taking Omeprozole without success. I take the antibiotics M-W-F and have tried spreading them out over the course of the day, taking all with food now, but to no avail. Has anyone experienced nausea so late in the treatment? Any suggestions for nausea control would be greatly appreciated!

@srsmith3802 Hmmm, that sounds like what happened to me at the end of my treatment - I was on daily antibiotics, and near the end NOTHING helped. Ginger chews lasted a few minutes, but I was miserable and losing weight at an alarming rate.
In consultation with my pulmonologist, the ID doc finally stopped the antibiotics early. That was four years ago and I have been doing fine using saline with airway clearance.
Have you discussed this new situation with your doc? Perhaps you have developed an intolerance to one of the meds.

Thank you Sue for responding. I tried to find a thread about others that have dealt with nausea while being on the antibiotics, but I couldn’t find it. My doctor at UT Tyler is out of office this week. They told me to reach out to my PCP. I have an appointment this afternoon. I’m going to hold on the meds until I can talk to Dr. McShane next week when she’s back…I’m pretty miserable, but still able to eat.

The Zofran I took, which didn’t work, is prescription. My PCP gave me a script for Phenergan yesterday. I stopped all my vitamins as well except for the probiotic.

You have probably already tried these things, but here goes - Sometimes taking them at bedtime helps because you are asleep through most of it. Or you can separate them and take them individually and see which one, over the course of the day, is causing the upset. Also, my Mayo doctor suggested raising the head of the bed off the floor 4-6" . It is an adjustment but it helps keep the stomach contents down and out of your esophagus. Reflux is a nasty contributor to MAC and sometimes we have "Silent Reflux" and don't realize it. I stopped taking the meds a year ago with continued positive sputum, but I was done. I had another CT on Monday and there is no change in my lungs comparatively, so I will continue staying off and doing things to support my lungs. Good Luck! Here is a link to Mayo. It is for chemo nausea, but is there a difference between drug induced nausea? https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/chemotherapy/in-depth/cancer/art-20047517

Thank you for your suggestions:) The nausea is so much better now off the meds. At this point, I’ve only missed the Friday dose since I’m M-W-F. If my sputum remain clear, I would be due to stop the antibiotics in March. I will defer to Dr. McShane’s direction about restarting them when she returns next week…
