UCSF Gynecology Oncology Symposium September 27, 2025

Posted by tilli @tilli, 3 days ago

I want to share an upcoming online free symposium being held by UCSF (University of California San Francisco) on September 27, 2025 that will take place from 9 am - 1 pm Pacific time. Various topics will be discussed such as managing long term side effects from radiation and how to thrive after a cancer diagnosis. I have had a few different cancers and understand the importance of getting information during this journey. The free symposium is open to all patients, caregivers and physicians. Pre-registration is required. Follow the link to register where you also will have access to prior events.

I find it extremely odd that not one word was spoken about "long term" effects from radiation when gaving it. Also, absolutely nothing was said about needing to use a "dialtor" for up to 5 yrs due to scar tissue build up. Unreal, when as soon after my last bach treatment I was given "the talk" about having to use that. ...and I was hesitant about getting internal radiation, so I "special talk" with doctor about it, throughly, I thought. Ot one mentioned of any long term effects from ANY of the Radiation treatment processes. I have a funny feeling I'm not alone. Its being hidden out there, all the risks. Im gonna go to this and see what else I should know, yet not one word told pretreatment, so one can make informed choice. Very upsetting

tdfaze,
Unfortunately, I have found that my oncologist has been very remiss in not reviewing potential side effects with me of chemo treatment. I guess I was supposed to know enough to ask. He really did not give much advice on dealing with the expected Neuropathy either during or after chemo ends. As far as radiation goes, I wonder if they feel there is no alternative treatment so the choice is treatment or a shorter life span. I have come to the conclusion that you have to do your own research. I refused Keytruda maintenance immunotherapy as my tumor lacks the genetic markers on which it has proven to be effective. At some point quality of life becomes very important.

Yes, ever learning, I was just upset cause I very much pressed about effects with my doctor. No long term mentioned at all. Just during said side effects usually go away 2-3 mos post radiation.
