Type two diabetes - morning blood sugar levels

Posted by Don @archer8119, Jun 3, 2017

My blood sugars are high every morning around 180 to 200 .
If I don't need anything in the morning they drop down to 76.
Has anybody had this problems ?

Hello @archer8119, and welcome to Connect.

I would like to introduce some other members with diabetes who might have a bit more to share about morning blood sugar levels. @ihatediabetes, @panicek @lesiel @minda77 @bogdel, @cowen150, @kbart, @nancywhite @amy75, and @lesiel, do you have any experience with blood sugar levels being high in the morning?

Thanks for asking. I have follow up with endocrinology on October. I developed skin sores on my legs but nobody told me why. But I got antibiotic cream for them. I asked it they are from diabetes but they told me that they aren't skin cancer. Good news. Dermatology residents work with mayo consultants. And they are looking through these lights to see if spots are skin cancer. Well they are not skin cancer but I don't know if diabetes causes skin lesions. I am training off and on for 5k. I am trying to exercise but uber driving a lot so I sit in car. Eating pretty healthy for supper but I still like breakfast sandwiches from Caribou or Starbucks. But doing better little by little.

You didn't say what your A1 is but I did do the blood sugar testing a lot at first. Found the same thing, kind of like bp, the numbers show up different all the time. But never into dangerous levels and fingers got so painful after a while. Now I depend on my A1C reading every three months and can usually tell when b.s. is down and I need something to eat or when I overdo it and get really sleepy. However I am still in the 7 range. I am on Metformin, extended tablet, I took the 500 at first and had horrible stomach problems. Changed to extended and take before bed because bloating is still a problem. Will have another talk with my doctor after next A1C test. Take good care of yourself.

@ihatediabetes - good to hear you are doing better little by little and training for a 5K. That is really great.

I did notice skin conditions here in the Complications section on Mayo Clinic's information on diabetes, https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/diabetes/symptoms-causes/syc-20371444, so it makes sense you'd wonder about the connection. Glad to hear they are not skin cancer. Is the antibiotic cream helping the skin sores on your legs?

@mell - are you having any side effects other than the bloating with the Metformin extended tabs? Is the bloating manageable?

@archer8119 Hi Don. Oh, yeah. Sort of standard, I think. I take my 28 of Novolin N around 9pm, and am usually around 150-200 or higher in am. Then 28 with meals. A little fat with my evening meal helps stabilize it, like a small piece of fried hamburger. And a little sugar like a cookie or a Reese's Pieces around 8 to kick up the pancreas output a little. I can't get too excited about it, though. A1c 5.6 pretty regular now

I am at 6.7 for my a1c so I thought I was doing well. But then I got these sores or lesions. And they hurt too. So the dermatologist resident told me to put bacitracin oitment on them. It has helped that I have been trying to run. I do think exercise helps my skin. I also wonder about menopause and hormones and what that does to skin. That happened to me too recently. Menopause and type 2 diabetes.

Hi, @archer8119, I know how difficult it can be to have high numbers in the morning when you haven't eaten all day. One reason could be that your liver notices low sugar at some point throughout the night and gives you back some of the sugar it stores. When I was having this issue, my doctor suggested eating a snack before bed - around 100 calories with some carbs and protein. I often did a few bites of a low-fat cheese and some fruit. This gives you a boost to your sugar throughout the night and stops (or can stop) your liver from giving you more sugar.

Good luck managing your numbers. It can be tricky to figure out the best balance for your body, but it's so freeing once you do.
