Tymlos causing belly fat?

Posted by kaa1 @kaa1, Jun 3 6:23pm

I’m on Tymlos for about 2 1/2 months now. I’m not usually concerned about my weight. I stay pretty stable. I’ve noticed that my belly seems to be getting fatter. Has anyone experienced this belly fat situation from Tymlos? Is there anything I can do about it? Why is it happening? Thanks for any input.

Belly fat YES. I posted somewhere else about it! However - in my case - through a fluke of circumstances and lab tests (ask your doctor for labs!) I asked my PCM not the Endo dept. where I do the medicine. My PCM is great about labs. I believe I have an L-carnitine deficiency. It showed up in intercellular testing in 2006. 2 years ago I was severely fatigued and had a myriad of side effects that mimicked all the side effects of the Tymlos these past couple months including the belly fat. Well, it turned out that I had stopped the LCarntine from a different doctor telling me to stop all supplements for Interstitial Cystitis (IC). I stopped the LCarnitine. My cortisol was super low. My cortisol was super low 2 years ago too when I went back on the LCarnitine! So I started it again and viola!!!! Naps stopped, BELLY FAT IS GOING DOWN and dizzying stopped. When the belly size was getting unacceptable I stopped injecting in my belly and just doing it in my thighs (my thighs are noticeably bigger). but I will take thighs over the tummy. L Carnitine is pretty harmless so maybe you want to try and report back. Athletes use it for performance. It allows the body to metabolize fats and build muscle easier. I know when we pass menopause - without those hormones we can't build muscle and metabolize fat like when we were younger. I have had many difficulties with my traditional doctors dealing with the supplement head-on because it is such an "in the weeds" kind of thing and they are bombarded. There are 3 or 4 kinds of LCarnitine. Fumarate works on performance/metabolism, L-acetyl Carnitine works on the vascular brain (my memory is sooo much better) LTartate Carnitine is supposed to be easiest for the body to metabolize (I am buying that today to try). The fumarate can give me insomnia so I have to dose the 1000 mg. and rotate it with the L Acetyl.
good luck all!

@loriesco I have trigeminal neuralgia and see a neurologist, which might be helpful for you, especially if there are no actual dental issues (which Tymlos reputedly does not cause). Also, many of us had good gains with doses of Tymlos that were 4, 6 or 7 clicks. Maybe you could try going down to 6 for awhile?

Wow. that is amazing to hear! My doctors administering the Tymlos don't know who to refer me to so they aren't. LOL Their just letting me suffer. So I am finding that my "flares" are related to upticks in meds - but then subside - I was not going to pursue this. (dental specialist is UBER expensive) then I thought of Ear Noses Throat Dr. which would be covered. But then I read there's no cure. So I figured - what's the point?
I see the endo dr. July 5th and I'm bringing as much info as I can gather. But since I broached the subject of less medication and they pushed back - but then later said "okay, you can work your way up" honestly, I know - they just don't know anything. Nor are they willing to find out -- which is WHY I am spending time HERE with you guys to see what you know. I did work my way up to 8 this weekend and had the TN return but now it is kinda "UNflaring." So I was willing to hang in there. But then I noticed the fat is returning... I wish the pharmaceutical company would have a report on 6 vs. 8 and body weight. I am small framed but probably now carrying about 140, 5'2. Not happy about the weight!
So, I am all ears.... what happened with the TN? Was the neurologist helpful? was it helpful to have an official diagnosis? did your Tymlos administrator work with the neurologist? THANK YOU for informing me where to go! I am so grateful!!!!

I have been using Tymlos for six months. So upset about the roll around my middle….stomach always flat as I’ve been a Pilates teacher and thin (5’2 115 lbs for years). All my paints tighter at waist. Has anyone been able to reverse this when done with Tymlos? Thank you!

For your reply. Maybe Tymlos should advertise that it “builds belly” in addition to bone, lol. I’m trying to get comfortable with my growing pouch, but it is difficult. I’m a yoga teacher and I know that worrying about my appearance is an ego thing but I am thinking of making a tshirt with an arrow pointing to belly, that says”it’s the medicine!” Humor never hurts😊

I know… I hate to be vain but I need a flat stomach lol. I’ll be devastated if, after all this, my T scores don’t improve:(
Best of luck to you❤️

Just want to add to this discussion that my fractures make my belly stick out way more than Tymlos did- and Tymlos can prevent fractures!

@loriesco you can just dose Tymlos the way you want to, honestly. I did tell my doctor what I had done and now he uses the ramp up method with some of his patients. I never did the full 8 clicks but could tolerate 7- a mystery why just one click of the pen made such a difference. Listen to your body. Tymlos still has good effect at 6 clicks, or even 4, I was told.

Neurology can prescribe meds (I cannot take gabapentin but take baclofen if needed; pain mes and muscle relaxants can also be prescribe). The neuro can also do lidocaine injections , which help some (but not me!).

I too am experiencing an increase of belly fat around my middle. I work out, go to a trainer, and do cardio classes regularly. This is my 5th month of Tymlos and I see extra fat around my midriff. My trainer said it's because I am drinking alcohol, which I hardly drink anymore.
This fat was never there until I started on Tymlos. It is depressing.
Thanks for your comments.

I can't handle nerve medicines. I've been on all of them. They make me feel like I have needles tingling in my head. Just low dose opioid with tylenol for 23 years for me. I always try other things to make the docs happy, but Percocet is the only opioid, and the only pain killer which I'll take. (ibuprofen put me in the hospital!) All the other NSAIDS only topical.
I noticed when I stopped after the first month and THEN they finally said do 2, 4, 6, to 8 clicks every 7 days - that when I started at TWO I had the SAME extreme effects as when I stated with the 8! So yes, I agree! It is CRAZY that such a little bit of medication has such a powerful effect! The only thing I can think of is that it is provoking a needed response. So I hesitate -- now that I am up to 8 to reduce it. But I was surprised the Trigemenial nerve disaorder returned, so I might. Did you have that BEFORE starting the Tymlos?
Also - a tip - don't know if it will work again or for you - the nerve root that runs along the top row of molars was in so much pain Saturday that I just bit down with firm pressure REALLY HARD. I'd release. I'd do it again and again until it turned into an itching sensation (which was better than the pain!).... and you know what? it WENT AWAY entirely the next day! It has not returned to severity of Friday's flare when I moved to 8 clicks. For a couple days it moved to the back of my jaw where my teeth open and close. It felt like a cankor sore would emerge (had my whole life) but nothing emerged. That has all subsided after 4 days. I'm just wondering if I am having an inflammatory reaction from the medicine and those nerve roots are in a vulnerable "weak" spot? Like my bones are really WANTING the medication there and having a reaction from it? I think it says something that you have this and I do too. I do not believe that is a coincidence!

I am sorry you are sad about this! I empathize! but I have to be honest and tell you I laughed out loud when I read your trainer's response! What's your age? (middle or geriatric) are you post menopause and how long? I used to drink a lot of cocktails and enjoy my wine accompaniment with my cooking and I had a 22" waist and after childbirth (31) it probably went to 24" Now it is 34"! I am a little person so I struggle. My bras are 34" back! fortunately I am a DD so there is a difference but gravity makes it look pretty bad. haha. I am 67. I stopped injecting into my tummy because I didn't know what else. And I started my LCarnitine (which is a metabolizer) and do arm/waist stretching in the morning and it REALLY is helping after 1 week! My love handles are going down and look much better so I feel better about myself.
Your trainer is probably a little correct - why? because when we are young our triglycerides (which is what alcohol is) metabolize as a carb (and are utilized for energy). When we are older it metabolizes like a fat. (and is stored). So maybe that was the perspective the trainer had? You should ask! I'd be curious to know! I just thought of that! (I had nutritional chemistry at SDSU 40 years ago). Don't be depressed if you can help it... get out and get those endorphins stimulated. You always have us. we'll love you midriff and all!

I’m going to pay for a scan in July when it will be six months. I really want to know if there’s improvement. Obviously not the full year but I will report back here!❤️
