Want to connect with people dealing with hypnic headaches
I'm looking for people that are dealing with hypnic headaches for a few years. Besides the usual treatment did you find anything new that helps ? have anyone tried the injections (Aimovig, Ajovy, Emgality) they usually give for people with migraines and if so , did it help with your hypnic headaches? Also if caffeine is still your 'go to' did a special brand worked better? Thanks for your help!

@mlpults looked up Fiorcet, and to me it’s iffy because of the barbiturate and addiction . Also it stays active in the body over 23 hours. Not good if you have to take it often. Indomethicine stays around 5 hours. And it does make me sleepy after about an hour.

1 Reaction@mlpults - Hi….so my go to meds have been Fiorcet (the real and the generic) and generally it worked like a charm ….it took away my headache in less than 30 minutes and i went right back to sleep….daytime and evening, no problem…i’ve been a night owl all my life and then tried changing my sleep habits!! Nope…headache showed up like clockwork 2-3 hours after falling asleep!
@lisalucier - Hi Lisa…thanks for your reply… Yes, i am going to a Neurologist in NYC who is part of the “Headache Division” at Cornell Weil…i do a lot of my own research and have discovered various methods and devices beyond the realm of taking a pill every day..i think you have to be your own advocate these days…

1 Reaction@duchess926 - you've posted here in a Mayo Clinic Connect discussion on hypnic headache, so I think you are in exactly the place you wanted to be.

You mentioned going to a neurologist for your headaches. Have you been to a neurologist who specializes in headache?
@mlpults one more thing, after exercising the headache is gone but it’s very hard to fall back asleep, thus up for 2 hours.
@mlpults hi all fellow sufferers 😬
I go to bed around 10:30 -11:00 most nights and it wakes me about 3 hours later. Between 2:00 and 3:30. If really tired and I go down at 9:30 , then it comes at 12:30-1:00.
I keep a record on the wall calendar with red masking tape for a headache, blue for sumatriptan .
I think it’s getting worse. Average 2 to 3 nights per week with no headaches. The rest I’m up for at least 2 hours with a headache. Sometimes it lasts all night and into the day . And then I take a sumatriptan. I’ve tried taking melatonin before bed, and it seems to make it worse. So I don’t see a cure, I’m not the only one . It could be worse. But duchess926 your post reinforces that…..my cure is 20 -30 minutes of light to medium exercise gets rid of it usually. Good luck all. It’s been 11 years. I’m 71.
@lisalucier - Hi…i posted a comment on Hypnic Headaches but not sure where it went??? I would like to join in the community for Hypnic Headaches…
Hi All….i’m a little lost on these posts…I made a post on HypnicHeadaches i think but not sure where it went and how to find it??
@mlpults - Hi.. I am new to this group but happy to find other people that have hypnic headaches. I am 83 years old and have been having these headaches since 2019. I think they are a side effect from my trigeminal nerve pain which was caused by a dentist. my question to anyone reading this post is about the time you all go to sleep. I tend to be a night owl and find that no matter what time I go to bed my headache occurs about two hours during my REM sleep …my Neurologist kept insisting that I don’t have hypnic because of the hour my headache occurs. My feeling is that it doesn’t matter when you go to sleep …it will occur about two hours after you go into a deep sleep, I have been taking Fiorcet for it, which worked really well as i managed to fall back to sleep after popping the pill and everything during the day and evening was really fine. apparently there is no information about the cause but my research shows that it might be a malfunctioning hypothalamus, messed up melatonin and circadian rhythm.
Hi @caj23 - I believe your message to @benchi300 may have gotten cut off somehow, and you may wish to repost it.
