Treating PANS/PANDAS

Posted by bajjerfan @bajjerfan, Feb 27 6:15pm

Are there any physicians at Mayo that treat adolescent with PANS/PANDAS?

It can be a result of post COVID complications.

PANS (Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) are conditions characterized by sudden onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms in children.

The only doctor in the area who can prescribe ivig therapy is retiring and it would be nice to have an alternative if more such therapy is indicated.

@bajjerfan, please contact Mayo Clinic Children's Center. There are experts specializing in PANS (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome) related to infection.

Thank You.

IMO it would be better to get a referral than to apply blindly and hope they accept you and they likely would need to hear from the patient's attending physician.

To which specialty group should a referral be made? Going through the list I don't see which one would be appropriate for that condition, (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome).

It is my understanding that Mayo doesn't recognize PANS/PANDA as a legitimate illness. Can anyone verify that?

PANDAS is recognized by Mayo Clinic "A possible relationship has been suggested between strep infection and a rare condition called pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with group A streptococci (PANDAS). " https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/strep-throat/symptoms-causes/syc-20350338

@bajjerfan, the appointment coordinator can help direct you to the appropriate specialty. You might wish to start with pediatric neuropsychiatry.

No ,I spoke to 3 different staff members and they told me conflicting information with the bottom line being that "they do not recognize the diagnosis, but will treat symptoms." This makes absolutely no sense and the first person told me I could request an appointment with Pediatric Neurology, final person ended up saying, "you can only get an appointment with general pediatrics." So disappointing that Mayo is so behind all the other centers on this. They're supposed to be the best.

I have been told that you have better luck connecting with a MD if you describe the illness as autoimmune encephalopathy rather than PANS/PANDAS.
