Tried Topiramate and Phentermine for weight loss? Side effects?
I had gastric bypass surgery in 2016.
Over time I regained the weight. Went to a gastric bypass doctor on referral by primary doctor.
He prescribed me Topiramate 50 Mg and Phentermine 15 Mg for weight loss management.
I am on the fence about taking these drugs even though he assured me it’s safe. Topiramate is a drug used to treat epilepsy and Phentermine is used to lessen appetite.
Has anyone in this group tried weight loss pills, if so which ones, were useful, and did you experience side effects.

I tried both of them together. No effect if you also can’t diet and exercise. Was also on wegovy for 5 months. I felt sick, somewhat depressed, and totally unmotivated for most of that time. I didn’t lose an ounce.
I started the 29 g low carb keto diet suggested by Dr Eric Westman (YouTube). After 2 months I have lost almost 20# . My husband has lost 22# and is at his goal weigh. He will stay on keto but up his carbs a little.
I still have 50# to go but I know I can make it on this diet since it is easy IF you take the time to understand it and plan your meals and have stuff in the house if you need it. Good luck. Obesity is a disease of the metabolism I think, activated by the junk added to our foods by big companies that want big money.
You can do this. You may need someone to do it with you or to be your support but you CAN do it.

2 ReactionsI have a prescription for Gabapentin, but had to stop taking it due to vision issues. I’m not super bothered by it though, since my pain has subsided quite a bit. I’m supposed to start Lexapro soon, but dread it due to the weight gain it can cause. That’s the last thing I need.

1 ReactionI take Topiramate, or Topamax, for neuropathy. It does stifle my appetite. I like that about it. I like Gabapentin more, for nerve pain, but my pcp won’t prescribe it to me.
I wasn’t aware that Topiramate can cause kidney stones. I get severe UTIs very frequently. Now I’m wondering if the Topamax could be exacerbating the problem.
Thanks for the info.

1 ReactionThat’s very doable, imo. I have about 40 more to go, though I’m not sure I should go that low. I was that low for most of my adult life, but I’ll look very thin now, if I there. I’m keeping it open and will discuss it with my doctor.
You sound very motivated and that’s most if it, imo.
That’s true about inches. I wrote my early measurements down and can’t locate them! Lol Oh well, hope they turn up.
Best of luck!

1 ReactionGood luck to you also on your weight loss goals!
Sadly, I have about 60lbs to go. 😭 But I'm motivated. I don't see the lbs as much as the inches.

3 ReactionsThat sounds awesome! Congratulations on your progress!
I am interested in the part about increasing metabolism. I’m on a weight loss journey too, except I didn’t have surgery. I’ve done really well, but have hit a plateau despite tight diet and daily workouts. I would like to drop 15 more by March 21 (not my ultimate goal)and can’t envision it happening at the rate I’m going now.
And, my calories are too low to decrease them any further. I take supplements to keep my nutrition on track. And, high nutrient foods.
I have type 1 diabetes and wear an insulin pump. That might be what holds me back at times.
Good luck going forward. How far are you from your goal?
Happy New Year!

2 ReactionsHappy New Year!
I started taking the medication. But before starting I completed a 5 day dry fast and 7 day water fast because I was having inflammation joint pain.
Lost 28 lbs and started the medication couple of days before Thanksgiving. It certainly helps me energy wise. Walking more and increasing my daily steps.
The thing is I don't eat much so the gastric bypass doctor prescribed it in hope to my increase metabolism.
I stopped taking them two weeks before Christmas because I had medical procedures done.
However, I am maintaining the weight loss most likely because I can't eat a-lot and not nibbling on the wrong foods.
I am glad you followed up with me today! I will start taking them.
Again, thank you so very much for reaching back out to me. ❤️🙂
