Today is Day 1
5 hours ago I learned that I have Stage 1 Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. My husband has Metastatic Prostate Cancer and Leukemia. We make quite the pair! I'm a little numb tonight and had a little brain fog teaching my class tonight. I'm looking forward to learning everything that I can from this special group of people.

I was diagnosed with ILC stage 1A grade 2 oncotype 22. in Jan 2025. I chose a bilateral mastectomy which I had done in Feb 25. My breast surgeon said from a surgical perspective, with a lumpectomy and radiation I had a 15% chance of reoccurrence and with a mastectomy I had a 2% chance.
The surgeon gave me a book which was immensely helpful in guiding my decision making. It is written by Judy C. Kneece and is the Breast Cancer Treatment Handbook, 10th Edition (2022): Understanding the Disease, Treatments, Emotions and Recovery from Breast Cancer. You can buy it on Amazon. It contains a wealth of good information and helped me make decisions.
ILC is called the sneaky cancer and likes to come back so I opted for bilateral mastectomies to reduce the likelihood of it reappearing in my other breast. I was also told that ILC does not respond well to chemo so didn’t want to run the risk of it coming back. I also did not want two different appearing breasts. I also wanted to give the surgeon the ability to get clean margins which she did. I did not have cancer in my three sentinel nodes which are biopsied after surgery.
I had HR positive and HERS negative so I am taking letrezole which is an aromatase inhibitor (AI) blocking my bodies ability to make estrogen which is a fuel for the cancer to grow. There are side effects from AI drugs. It has been almost a year. I have some joint and muscle pain and most recently neuropathy in my feet. I am waiting to see my oncologist to discuss perhaps changing medications. Not having estrogen in your body affects you. Taking Bonafide revere has helped maintain vaginal and bladder health. It is over the counter and a great product.
I wish you the best in your journey. The shock of the diagnosis will wear off and enable you to focus on each step and make the best decisions for your long term health. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. And get the handbook. It has lists of questions to ask providers and explanations for everything. Be an educated consumer for yourself.
