Total Knee Repair Revision: A Success Story

Posted by ezas123 @ezas123, Aug 4, 2022

Hi all I I am 1 week out of revision today . I must say this recovery has been so different from my first. I have so much more movement in my knee …. My leg goes straight….. my flexion work in progress but I was at .70 right out of surgery ….. I was there a year after tkr…..struggling of course with inflammation which I expected….I am icing and going to my therapist to help with edema…. I started pt this week also so you know how it goes take to where you can than push little more…..the pain really sucks going through this all over again I have not forgot the pain from last time … but the difference is I know I am seeing results already….even with the pain for right now I am so glad I did revision….. good luck to others going through and might be going through this .

Stick with it ezas. I believe the post-op target is 120 degrees of flexion but we're all different. Push it a little more each day, bit not too far.

My surgeon used the Mako robotic assistant on both TKRs with amazing results. The first week post-op is the hardest but 1) get in shape BEFORE surgery and 2) get into PT immediately AFTER surgery and 3) ice and elevate and in three or four weeks you'll almost certainly be glad you had the surgery. No more bone-on-bone grinding!

I am able to walk up stairs normally going down a little tuff but doing normally….my dr very impressed what I have regained he said I have exceeded his expectations ……he also said possible to go further …. I asked him when does it stop hurting lol …he said when you reach your ultimate flexion and are able to just hold it there …. Than in time pain will go ….. so for now I am still pushing …. Continue my exercise 2 a day , water therapy , mfr , and graston on back of my knee I had 2 sessions so far on back of my knee I think it helps…..so yes pt is done but work will continue lol ….

You're doing well ezas. 3 months out and 110 flexion, I'm guessing you'll get to 120. Stairs were the last thing that gave me trouble, especially walking downstairs. But as flexion increases and swelling decreases, that will diminish. Great job friend!

You are doing great - no doubt you will reach your goal. I bet you are in a minority continuing your therapy twice a day for 3 months, but it will be worth it in the long run! I had ACL/MCL replacement & repair almost 30 years ago, did therapy for 6 months, and got back to every prior activity without weakness or limp. And I had a very "complicated" hip replacement journey that ended with over 6 months of daily therapy - 11 years later, my hips are about the strongest part of me.
Keep your eye on the prize- long-term success!
Congratulations on your hard work.

Thanks Sue,

Keeping your leg muscles strong is critical to keeping your new knees (or hips) as new as possible. The good news is that, for most people, the knees feel so good that exercise is a joy rather than a chore. I'm doing more than I ever thought possible and I'm 68 y/o.
