TKR 10 MONTHS AND VERY STIFF

Posted by enkhuizen666 @enkhuizen666, Oct 5, 2025

I HAD TKR 10 MONTHS AGO AND HAD GOOD RANGE OF MOTION, BUT VERY STIFF KNEE RESULTING IN A BAD LIMP. SURGEON SAID X-RAYS GREAT AND NOTHING TO DO. I STARTED SHOCK WAVE THERAPY WITH ELECTRIC ACCUPUNTURE ONCE A WEEK. 5 WEEKS LATER 50 PERCEENT BETTER.SURGEON SAID I MIGHT ALWAYS NEED A WALKER. NOW NO MORE WALKER.

Do you own a tens machine ? That is what I’m using for inflammation . They are inexpensive now and if you buy from your physio they will show you how to use it .

I seem to keep inflammation longer then many but I do love salt 🤷🏻‍♀️

"No more walker". Perhaps one should also say "No more doctor". I could probably train a chimpanzee to look at an x-ray. There is more to being a good orthopedist than simply looking at an x-ray.

I struggled with being very stiff and not getting good ROM. My PT could force my knee, and it hurt, but the ROM was there. I just couldn't seem to do it on my own. Eventually I discovered that I got better ROM doing two things --
1. Instead of lying on my back trying to slide my heel toward my butt, I laid on my side, brought my thigh up, and then bent my knee.
2. I hung my leg over the end of my bed -- I have a brass bed with a horizontal pole -- and relaxed my leg. I did this with a foam wedge too.
I'm guessing that I had some tension that was restricting my ROM, and both of these exercises allowed me to be more relaxed. My surgeon seemed surprised at the increase in ROM between visits. I don't know what my ROM is now, but it is as good on the new knee as it is on the other.

THANK YOU. I WILL TRY THIS FOR STIFFNESS, BUT MY ROM IS REALLY GOOD. THE SHOCK WAVE AND ACCUPUNCTURE ARE REALLY GETTING RID OF MY STIFFNESS.

I am 17 months post TKR with Genesis 11 and still having significant pain and stiffness. Have been religiously doing exercises, trying different ones to try to improve.
Apparently I need a revision to deal with further arthritis under the kneecap, but was told that revision was not always successful. The other knee needs doing but I am discouraged about doing it because of this outcome
A nuclear medicine scan reading suggested that the problem could be related to the "product" used in surgery.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

@cj38

I have one suggestion: get a revision specialist to look at and potentially do your revision. Revisions are more complex than original TKRs and you need the best revision surgeon you can find...even it if means traveling if you can possibly afford it. I would want to know that my choice had done at least a hundred successful revisions before mine.

Thank you for your comment. I have not heard of a "revision surgeon" before.
I will have to search that out.
