Thought I was healthy at 39

Posted by mhoffer @mhoffer, Dec 17, 2021

So back on Nov 15, 2021 I started getting an intermittent dull pain on my lower right side. After a week of it I went to an urgent care and a X-ray was taken of my abdomen and a urinalysis was done and the Dr. Said both look fine and I must of pulled a muscle. Well fast forward to Nov 25, 2021 I started feeling weak and woozy, not well. Nov 26, 2021 I woke up at 2am it felt like my stomach was going to explode it hurt all over BAD I got up and went to the bathroom, while sitting on the toilet I fainted and hit my head on the bathtub hard. My wife woke up from the sound of the impact. I went to the ER and had a CT scan done of my abdomen which for the most part checked out. They did find short segment left mid abdomen small bowel intussusception of about 12mm. They also did a ultrasound of my gallbladder and other organs in that area including my aorta valve it also came back fine. A small bowel follow-through performed which came back fine. I had blood work done and it came back fine. The Dr said from my CT scan it looked like I was really backed up and needed to take some laxatives. Which I agreed I haven’t been going like normal which I thought was weird because I spend my whole life being VERY regular at least twice a day. So they sent me home I took laxatives and the following day Nov 27, 2021 I felt pretty good like I was out of the woods. Well that night I woke up and it felt like a hole was being burned into my stomach BAD. I was feeling woozy again and dizzy just not right, So I went I went back to the ER more blood work was done and it was fine. They also did a stool sample for Giardiasis and other bugs and that was negative. The Dr said he thinks I have a stomach ulcer. I said ok but I’ve never even had heartburn before or Indigestion, he said you can still get an ulcer. They gave me Sucrafate, Prilosec and dicyclomine. I took them and the pain went away pretty rapidly. Come the following day I felt pretty good and thought I was in the clear well I kept getting nauseous I had no energy I couldn’t eat I really felt like I was dying inside. I went back to the ER and they did more blood work and it came back normal Dr gave me anti nausea medicine would kind of helped. I lived like this with just constantly feeling sick and unwell for a couple more days then I went to another Hospitals ER where more blood work was done and it came back fine and they basically said it’s just a ulcer. Come Dec 10 I noticed my systems have slightly improved. I wake up feeling hyperglycemia and shaky I don’t have the nausea as bad and I’m able to eat easier. But every morning I wake up with what reminds me of a really bad hangover and come 3pm I start to feel better. I went to a GI Specialist who did some other blood test and she said my liver enzymes were slightly elevated 41 I believe the number was. I go in for a Endoscopy on Dec 22. To this day I still don’t have the energy I use to, I still feel weak and fatigue I still don’t poo like I use to and I’m really scared because prior to Nov 15 only issues I’ve ever had is a Appendicitis other than that I’ve been a health person on no medication. Any help or thoughts would be welcome.

@livefully

I recommend the Integrative Med department at Mayo Clinic Hsp, Jacksonville FL. Ive had years of weird GI stuff and they were able to nail it where the slew of GI doctors and other specialists (all non Mayo folks) I went to didnt. The number for the Integrative dept appointment line at Mayo is 904-953-0951. I rec Dr. Adam Perlman. I see him and a nutritionist there (Lisa) and the treatment plan they developed for me has improved my physical health to such a degree that friends, family, and colleagues have noticed. If your looking for a straight up "I go to the doctor, get a test, take meds, and am fine" then its not for you. If your willing to go on a health journey that might include things like keeping food logs, etc and you recognize that getting to the root/core/bottom of things is like being a detective then this department is for you. Hands down, they will work like detectives to help figure out what is going on. Bottom line, they are the reason I can go on a hike etc and not have to stress about "where will the bathroom be and how close will I be to it".
Best of luck.

@mhoffer Did they do a test that gave you more of a clue? How did they find out the root cause and did you find being a low fodmap or just a healthy diet helped? It seems like a lot of ppl have gastro issues but not a lot of mentions of the root causes discovered. Glad you found some help.

Best wishes …
I hope you find the solution and the right Dr’s .
I’m on a 10 year journey of chronic digestive disorders, 6 diagnoses…
Done everything RX wise , Holistic, diet wise , Functional Medicine Dr , 6 Gastro Drs … even Mayo Clinic Jacksonville for testing . Had over 20 tests done ☑️ in that time . Still testing . Still trying to cope w/ this daily .
The gas my body produces is unbearable and 1000’s of deep wet belching day and night . Everything makes me sick 🤢. I hate eating and I eat super clean . I’m not losing weight which is incredible after being so sick and not eating much during day .
I’m going to go to a Therapist and NP psychiatrist Neil having a rough time dealing w/ it . I’m a medical mystery. I have things they just can’t fix. .
God Bless you ..

If anyone is curious it's now been almost 2 years I think. My stomach is back to normal for the most part. I still avoid coffee and I'm careful about red sauces like spaghetti. But overall I'd say I'm 99% back to normal I do not need to take any medicine which is nice. Looking back I feel this happened due to the 11.5 month of the keto diet I was on. And I went hardcore on it. I think my stomach just couldn't handle it. But I thank the lord I'm better and back to normal.

I could have written this. Started with me January 2023. I have every test available with nothing definitive except GERD. Next is an appointment with a Gastroenterologist. Some days I can function but too many that I can't. The newest med I just got-Dicyclomine, have been taking Sucralfate. Good luck to you.

Hello @nowick and welcome to the Digestive Health support group on Mayo Connect. I'm sorry to hear that you are dealing with a condition that seems to defy a diagnosis and treatment plan. That is very frustrating.

Is there anything that you recall happening prior to the problems you are experiencing. For example, did you change your eating habits or move to a new location? Are there any particular foods that trigger your symptoms?

Hello @mhoffer,

It is interesting that you were able to trace the symptoms back to a change in your diet. It is great that you were able to determine some foods that were triggers for your problems.

What about the keto diet do you think was a trigger for your symptoms?

I have never been bothered by GERD or acid reflex until now . No foods trigger this. I have always eaten well. I just cannot deal with the pain. I haven't been eating much so have lost 22 pounds since January 2023-Thank for your reply!

I am very sorry you are going through that, & for such a long time. I know the frustration of not getting a correct diagnosis . It is awful. Hope they figure it out soon.

No, I have always eaten healthy. Just started one day. Thought I was having a heart attack. Docter keeps changing my scripts but nothing is working. If the pain gets unmanageable-I drink a glass of wine to get some relief which works for a little while even knowing it's not good
