Thought I was healthy at 39

Posted by mhoffer @mhoffer, Dec 17, 2021

So back on Nov 15, 2021 I started getting an intermittent dull pain on my lower right side. After a week of it I went to an urgent care and a X-ray was taken of my abdomen and a urinalysis was done and the Dr. Said both look fine and I must of pulled a muscle. Well fast forward to Nov 25, 2021 I started feeling weak and woozy, not well. Nov 26, 2021 I woke up at 2am it felt like my stomach was going to explode it hurt all over BAD I got up and went to the bathroom, while sitting on the toilet I fainted and hit my head on the bathtub hard. My wife woke up from the sound of the impact. I went to the ER and had a CT scan done of my abdomen which for the most part checked out. They did find short segment left mid abdomen small bowel intussusception of about 12mm. They also did a ultrasound of my gallbladder and other organs in that area including my aorta valve it also came back fine. A small bowel follow-through performed which came back fine. I had blood work done and it came back fine. The Dr said from my CT scan it looked like I was really backed up and needed to take some laxatives. Which I agreed I haven’t been going like normal which I thought was weird because I spend my whole life being VERY regular at least twice a day. So they sent me home I took laxatives and the following day Nov 27, 2021 I felt pretty good like I was out of the woods. Well that night I woke up and it felt like a hole was being burned into my stomach BAD. I was feeling woozy again and dizzy just not right, So I went I went back to the ER more blood work was done and it was fine. They also did a stool sample for Giardiasis and other bugs and that was negative. The Dr said he thinks I have a stomach ulcer. I said ok but I’ve never even had heartburn before or Indigestion, he said you can still get an ulcer. They gave me Sucrafate, Prilosec and dicyclomine. I took them and the pain went away pretty rapidly. Come the following day I felt pretty good and thought I was in the clear well I kept getting nauseous I had no energy I couldn’t eat I really felt like I was dying inside. I went back to the ER and they did more blood work and it came back normal Dr gave me anti nausea medicine would kind of helped. I lived like this with just constantly feeling sick and unwell for a couple more days then I went to another Hospitals ER where more blood work was done and it came back fine and they basically said it’s just a ulcer. Come Dec 10 I noticed my systems have slightly improved. I wake up feeling hyperglycemia and shaky I don’t have the nausea as bad and I’m able to eat easier. But every morning I wake up with what reminds me of a really bad hangover and come 3pm I start to feel better. I went to a GI Specialist who did some other blood test and she said my liver enzymes were slightly elevated 41 I believe the number was. I go in for a Endoscopy on Dec 22. To this day I still don’t have the energy I use to, I still feel weak and fatigue I still don’t poo like I use to and I’m really scared because prior to Nov 15 only issues I’ve ever had is a Appendicitis other than that I’ve been a health person on no medication. Any help or thoughts would be welcome.

I had a bleeding ulcer fixed via endoscope. Have them check you for H Pylori. Change your diet to more bland food no spices.

Yea I’ve been on bland for a 3.5 weeks not even pepper. I’m hoping for some answers on my endoscopy on Tuesday. Today I only felt woozy a few times throughout the day and my energy level was a little more too.

Have you been on prednisone by any chance??? I was given prednisone by infusion last May when I was hospitalized for pneumonia (no Covid), the prednisone gave me an ulcer and I’ve been fighting an ulcer since last May. Lost around 50 lbs, diagnosed with EPI, and now on Zenpep. I still faint, but not as often as I used to…
you describe exactly how I feel with the nausea especially in the am. Hypoglycemia is awful. I wake up early too, to feed the ulcer.
I have to be regimented with my food and track everything I eat to ensure that I eat enough. It’s a struggle for sure. I hope you get some relief.

I hate to ask the obvious question, but I may have missed it in your comments: Did they investigate the hit to your head when you went to the ER? You can have nausea, dizziness, fatigue...after a concussion and feel generally unwell.

They felt around my head and there was a large bump but no they didn’t go to deep into that.

I did get my endoscopy done yesterday and they found a ulcer in my duodenal bulb it wasn’t bleeding.

Over all I do keep feeling better and I’m almost back to 100%

But today my throat feels scratchy and a little sore I would like to think it’s just from the endoscopy, but my wife feels the same way with her throat today so I’m questioning if we (my wife and I) I getting a cold.

I’d normally start taking emergenc and zinc at this point but with a ulcer I don’t know if that’s a good idea or not.

I’ve never taken prednisone. And I have a whole new outlook when someone says they have been dealing with a ulcer. It’s been by far the worst part of my life.

Stay away from aspirin and Ibuprofen .

You need to sit down with your gastroenterologist to talk about diet and meds so it doesn’t get worse.

You might also consider speaking with a professional to find out what may have contributed to your ulcer if not illness, diet or medication induced. In this current climate we are in is anyone really totally healthy?
