Thigh weakness/foot drop after spine surgery

Posted by luamiller @luamiller, Mar 27, 2023

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had thigh weakness after lumbar fusion surgery which is creating foot drop. I had my surgery 1 1/2 ago and my leg weakness and foot drop are still persisting. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this and if you have has it resolved?

This conversation is helpful and informative. I just have a bit of this. I am recovering from spinal stenosis surgery. I've noticed that there are times my toes want to curl on my right foot. It sounds like if I keep walking my little dog Miah that it will help. Thanks again, for the conversation.

I love this Site and helpful info from others. You might want to have an EMG to make sure that there is not pressure in your back or lower affecting your foot.

i find if I can somehow stretch my leg either by going to the chiropractor it helps. I finally figured out how to put my foot between two spindles on the banister and gently turning away, it helped. Then I went to my chiropractor and had him only work on my neck and gently turn my straightened leg out, it has done the trick.

What you are saying sounds interesting, but I'm not sure that I understand. Could you explain more?
Thank you!

I think by having the chiropractor turn my leg outward and gently pull my leg, it removes the pressure off a nerve or two. By putting my right foot between the two spindles on the banister, turning to the left and stretching my leg by leaning to the left at the same time, does the same. It's all about getting pressure off the nerve(s) that affect the leg and foot. My chiropractor gave me a tennis ball a few years ago. I place on my back where the pain is. Then lean against a wall and roll the ball backwards and forwards.

i don't think can have an EMG. I have a pacemaker. I went to my chiropractor for the first time in six months. He didn't touch my lower back. He only worked on my neck and manipulated my leg. That did the trick. I think when he does that it moves the muscle off the nerve. I found I can do the same--almost, by putting my foot between two spindles in the railing and twisting my body to the left. It's not as effective as my chiropractor's treatment but it works until I can see him.

Be sure to state what part of your back that you want manipulated. The first treatment after surgery was similar to the one, I had last week. My second treatment was more complete and it took me weeks to get over it.

My acupuncturist had a similar operation to mine. She reminded me that bone takes longer to heal than flesh.

Thank you! All info appreciated! It might sound odd but the Chiropractor I plan to see is somewhat of an intuitive in the way that he approaches the body. I know a number of people who have been to him so giving it a chance!
