I think by having the chiropractor turn my leg outward and gently pull my leg, it removes the pressure off a nerve or two. By putting my right foot between the two spindles on the banister, turning to the left and stretching my leg by leaning to the left at the same time, does the same. It's all about getting pressure off the nerve(s) that affect the leg and foot. My chiropractor gave me a tennis ball a few years ago. I place on my back where the pain is. Then lean against a wall and roll the ball backwards and forwards.
