The NYT Reported 80% of Ovarian Cancers Begin in the Fallopian Tubes
In the August 14th issue of The Week magazine, (a magazine that publishes brief reports from other publications and media), on the Health and Science page reported that 80% of ovarian cancers actually started in the fallopian tubes. I attached the article - do click on the article to see it clearly. A number of ladies elect to have their tubes tied after establishing their families, this finding is something to think about when reaching that decision.
I do not follow this support group, but here on Connect we like to share! One of my Mah Jongg friends shared her experience. As a young woman, she needed a hernia repair. A suspicious growth was noted and removed. You probably guessed what it was - a good example of how so many medical issues are found while treating an unrelated issue.

@walkinggirl Thank you for posting this article and information. I've read articles in the NY Times about ovarian cancers starting in the fallopian tubes. This is very helpful information to talk about with one's gynecologist.
How is it determined if the ovarian cancer actually started in the tubes as opposed to starting in the ovaries ?

1 Reaction@bettydee Excellent question. I do not know the answer for sure, but I just did a little research. It seems the question/theory came up around 2017, and scientists decided to study cases of ovarian cancer. The NIH, a reputable organization, publicized this study which may answer your question. https://www.cancer.gov/news-events/cancer-currents-blog/2017/ovarian-cancer-fallopian-tube-origins.
In an article published more recently, at John Hopkins, we can read about how scientists are using that finding to come up with ways to detect ovarian cancer long before the first physical signs of that awful disease are noted. https://inbt.jhu.edu/working-to-detect-ovarian-cancer-earlier/ I hope this helps to answer your question at least in part.
