Tear duct blockage after cataract surgery

Posted by jc100 @jc100, Aug 2, 2023

My right lower eye lid near the nose has been slightly swollen and red since my cataract surgery 5 months ago. It was not there before the surgery. Will it heal naturally? I pointed it out to my surgeon, she recommended warm compress.

...not saying it doesn't work, but warm compresses seem to be suggested for many eye issues. I bought the "kit" from Optometrist but concerned about my overheating it in microwave; the weight of it on my eyes with high pressure/glaucoma; and if I use a wash-cloth should I use hot tap water or boiled and cooled... then it cools off so quickly; also how many times a day for dry eyes etc... seems such a simple thing to do but up and down stairs for microwave etc. ... anyone found a simple way? Thanks (p.s. have you searched internet for problem/cause/solution - hope someone here can help you... five months seems a long time to have this; am concerned myself too for the possibility of cataract surgery in future.... take care, J.

Thank you, @lacy2; I will see my surgeon next week and ask her more questions about other possible remedies.

My husband had something called Blepharitis which made him sensitive to light. He started wearing sunglasses in the house and 2 pairs outside! Anyway it had to do with crust on his eyelashes. The doctor said warm compresses and we added baby shapoo on the washcloth when he too a shower. After about a week he has seen a big improvement...good luck !

Thank you! My doctor also recommended baby shampoo. I should do that more consistently.

....do you put the shampoo on eyelids from bottle or mix with some water first?

I put a small amount in my hand and mix it with water, then apply it to my eyelid close to the lashes. This was recommended by my doctor.

Apparently, warm compresses seem to be the answer to every problem. But it’s not.!!! Have been trying it for six months now for some eye, pain and blurring after cataract surgery. No doctor is totally convinced about dry eye. But, use warm compresses is the answer. Ha. I bought the baby shampoo, do you use a little on a Q-tip and scrub the lids? Do you rinse? Thanks very much.

I also have tear duct blockage, and wash my eyelids with baby shampoo every night in shower. I'm scheduled to start 4 months of IPL laser treatments in Oct. Has your doc talked about IPL treatments?

It is good to know about this IPL treatment. My doctor did not mention it; she wanted me to use a warm compress and baby shampoo, then wait and see. Unfortunately, I am moving to central New York next month, so I have to find a new eye doctor once I move there.

I put a small amount of baby shampoo in my hand, mix it with water, then use it to clean the eyelids, including the eyelash area. Afterward, I rinse my eyes with water. You do not want to get the shampoo into your eyes.
