Can Tacrolimus be causing dizziness post liver transplant?

Posted by jtjourney @jtjourney, Oct 13 9:20am

I am 14 months post liver transplant and doing very well. In the last month I've been experiencing slight dizziness upon standing. I read where tacrolimus could be causing this. Anyone else experiencing this?

We have a set of 4 stairs and a set of 11 stairs to get to bedroom. When she gets to the top she can barely get in bed, having to sit for a few minutes to catch her breath. It's not just the stairs, thoughout the summer, it was good, as she walked about 200 yards twice in one day, but 3 days later she isn't able to move much and sits in her chair most of the day. Please keep us informed how your progress is and we will do the same to hopefully help each other get back to enjoying life. We got this, and you got this!

@kim1965 thanks getting back to me. Mine is not as bad unless I do physical labor in my yard. I work for 15 minutes and rest for 20. Mayo cardiac suggests I do more exercise. So I’ve started walk 1 mile a day.

Can you share when it started to get better in months? My wife's started almost immediately after the transplant, but stayed around till they realized she had some liquid in her right lung. After about 4 Thorantesis to drain it, that finally went away, but the restricted breathing has maintained. Every once in a while, she gets a spurt and can walk a couple hundred yards, but far from a everyday thing. With her sitting around so much I always wonder if that has contributed to the breathing issues. The Pulmonologist has determined that the lung is expanding ok, but it is decreasing creating the issues that remain yet. I'm glad to hear your breathing sounds like it is getting better, that's great!

My wife had her liver transplant in January 2025, so it coming up on 11 months since. I wondering if anyone in this group has had breathing problems, in losing there breath in walking still at 11 months? We are working with the pulmonologist at our liver transplant hospital, but they haven't found anything definitive yet. Our liver transplant team states the most improvement in her day to day lifestyle should improve in the 9-12 months range. I'm just wondering what others in the group experienced in this stage of recovery, if it corresponds with what we are being told?

@kim1965 my husband had his in April 2025 and has been experiencing shortness of breath. I could be the secondary effects of Tacrolimus.

That is a very interesting bit of information that we and our team has not taken into account. All we been told the tacrolimus is the gold standard for liver transplant patients. Has your doctor/team or pharmacist mentioned to you that breathing issues could be a secondary effect?
