Sutures didn't dissolve after tkr revision

Posted by tkrfail21 @tkrfail21, Dec 30, 2023

Had 2nd knee surgery to remove lots of scar tissue. After 6 months the sutures aren't dissolving. The are visible under the skin as big bumps in a row. Very painful as it feels like they are coming through the skin.

You probably should call and check with your surgeon's office for an appointment to see what's going on. I did not have any dissolving stitches used for either of my TKR's or my right reverse TSR. They used metal staples which the nurse removed at my two week check up. At that time, she applied butterfly bandages which were expected to fall off by themselves within a few days. But since your surgery was a revision, maybe there were reasons for the dissolving stitches.

My revision specialist said he would address it after 1 year has passed from my surgery. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this. The suture at the bottom of the scar line is almost pointing through my skin and painful.

Are you sure this is not scar tissue (rather than sutures that didn't dissolve)? I have never heard of this. But clearly you're prone to scar tissue.

I hope you get an answer. I would think a local anesthetic is all that a surgeon would need to remove these if they are sutures.

All the best to you.

I had that with my appendectomy. I ended up just pulling them out as the stitches came out. I thought it was weird.

On my first knee replacement, I had one dissolvable stitch start popping up through the skin. It got very irritated and my PT made me see the doc. His PA removed it and it healed right up with the antibiotics I was given. I didn’t have bumps like yours.

These are not stitches. The surgeon says they are sutures. They are hard like bone and the size of large peas. They are in a row curved around my knee cap.

Sorry, I should have said sutures. I would go to the doctor that did them. I wouldn't like that feeling.

I have something similar going on but mine started as a blood blister six week from TKR. The surgeon squeezed the fluid out (much to my chagrin without gloves) and gave me antibiotics. It eventually closed over. Pressing on it is not painful or hard but periodically then the knee is bent it feels like pulling/ripping and is a painful. I think mine is probably scar tissue but I'll find out at my six month appointment.

Interesting . . . My surgeon did not use any external sutures - he used a super-glue-like adhesive with a special tape over the incision. I was told that after a few days, the tape could be wet, and would come off by itself when ready. Afterwards, he instructed me to massage the incision site with lotion twice daily. I actually used Palmer's cocoa butter/vitamin e formula, which I learned from past experience (other surgeries) helps healing and minimizes scars. This was recommended to me years ago by a surgeon that I worked with.
