Survey: nebulizers and compressor systems speed, etc.

Posted by pacathy @pacathy, Dec 6, 2024

A recent p.m. from another member about my nebulizer compressor recommendation, esp speed. I am very new to nebbing (18 months) compared to others and think a survey might be beneficial to compare our common uses-albuterol and NS.

1. Which compressor and nebulizer brand (mouth piece) do you use?

2. How long does it take you to nebulize albuterol?

3. How long does it take you to nebulize normal saline? Do you use 4ml (CVS or other) or 5ml (Amazon or other).

4. Misc pros or cons of your neb or your compressor?

Medicare has NEVER covered my 7% saline! How in the world can this be?

Some Medicare advantage plans do cover it. However, I don’t have an Advantage plan and was just wrong. I checked with CVS and Medicare didn’t pay mine. My great secondary covers most of my meds. It’s a set, cheap co-pay for generic or brand meds. The exception is Albuterol. It surprised me with it’s large copay because it’s considered home medical and has to be billed to Medicare. I figured NS was the same despite occasionally reading that it didn’t cover.

Sorry for confusing you. Btw, the tech said CVS has their own discount program and had used that for mine. I’ve never heard of or seen info on that. Since I know now the entire amount is out of pocket, I mught compare prices.

They didn't have a no saline warning. I'm talking about many of the others I have looked at since my last Innospire died.

I have been researching since my last Phillips died and it seems nothing has the power! I bought a Drive power neb ultra a month ago and about a week about went back to a 30 year old black Phillips neb.

sad

Hi pakathy,
I think your idea to put out this survey will be very helpful to those of us who are relatively new (approx 2 yrs.) I'm using a compressor and Flutter Device that my Pulmonologist provided when she encouraged me to do AWC as a way to manage the NTM/BE and avoid further damage to my lungs.
Flo@frankie160

Frankie160 Reporting the following
1. Which compressor and nebulizer brand (mouth piece) do you use?
InnoSpire Essence, Manufactured in China for Respironics Respiratory Drug Delivery, LTD, (UK address) This device was given to me by my pulmonologist along with a Aerobika flutter device.

2. How long does it take you to nebulize albuterol?
10 minutes give or take and 3 min using the Aerobika Flutter Device

3. How long does it take you to nebulize normal saline? Do you use 4ml (CVS or other) or 5ml (Amazon or other).
15 min plus 3 minutes with Flutter Device
Use CVS's saline 4mld

4. Misc pros or cons of your neb or your compressor?
Pro works well (1st one lasted 18 months)
Con Hope replacement lasts longer....also too heavy for travel
I find the entire AWC biz a pain and time consuming but have found that if I try any short cuts, I pay the price with excessive coughing within a day or so.
Looking for a good mask set up rather than just the pipe for more comfort.
Hope to hear from others.
Ever Onward,
Flo@frankie160

I use a McKesson nebulizer. I was using the in mouth piece but found it started to move my bottom teeth. Guess I am a biter without realizing it. It also comes with a mask with a string that goes behind your head. I cut the string off because it was a pain in the rear to wash - it stays wet and feels gross when you nebulize next time. So I cut the string off and just hold it in place. CAn't use a computer to type with one hand or other things. I might try reading a book or just sit there for 20 minutes and relax and breath deep. For traveling purposes it is small and fits in the top of my compression vest case with the attachments. It doesn't seem loud to me but I can't hear anyway. I just bought it at a local medical supply store here in North GA. About 60.00 and have had it for about a year now. Beats me how I am supposed to take Dawn dishwashing detergent with me to Ireland.

Well, this weekend, I decided "enough!" My third DeVilBiss Traveler is slowing down after over 3 years, and I'm getting ready to travel for 5 or 6 weeks this fall. I decided to bite the bullet and get the expensive Pari nebulizer - since I'm apparently going to be using one for the rest of my life, my husband says I deserve to get the one I want.
(I had and loved the Phillips handheld until it died and they went out of the nebulizer business.)

I'll report how I like it as soon as the doc sends the prescription.

I am new to nebulizers. The driver from the med supply company is bringing the nebulizer and teaching me. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions after that. I find all your conversations very helpful. Thank you. I also have an appointment to talk to a nurse from NJH to give all my medical information. Roz

1. Ombra compressor with Aerobika.
2. I use Airsupra as needed, prior to my morning nebulizer.
3. 7% saline solution, morning and evening. My Humana PPO Medicare plan covers. Copay is about $2 for 100 4 ml vials. Takes 20 minutes.
4. I recently switched from the VIOS compressor to the Ombra. I like the Ombra better since the tubing and filter can be changed out easily.

Waiting on the doc's Rx - I think the nurse said she would be in today.
