Surgical entry for left atrium ablation?

Posted by chickenfarmer @chickenfarmer, 13 hours ago

I had ablation in 2017 during which an Atrial Septal Defect (basically a ragged hole in the wall between atria) was plugged. After several years without symptoms I'm experiencing a few AF episodes. After reading the literature I find that the average ablated patient will begin to show symptoms after 5 years - "The Kudzu is growing". So anyway my EP is recommending another ablation however because of the ASD plug, he has determined the catheter must enter my left atrium through a surgical incision in my lower abdomen. Are there any readers who have experienced this alternate left atrium procedure or can someone refer me to literature describing it. I'm concerned about possible complications.
