Surgical evaluation coming up for gastric sleeve. What to ask?

I had a gastric bypass, not a sleeve, but some of the same questions may apply. Here are a few things I would ask, maybe already on your list.
Surgery:
How long will the operation take?
Will I need to stay overnight in the hospital? (probably not)
What type of anesthesia will be used?

Recovery & Post-Op Care
- What can one expect for pain?
- What will recovery look like, 1-2 days, 1st week, etc?
- Dietary restrictions. Will there be a pre-op consult with someone on your care team about progression from clear liquids and liquids to blended foods, then to regular foods? They should also advise about liquid and protein requirements.
- What vitamin/supplements will be required post-op. Example B-12.
- Should you be concerned about diarrhea or constipation, and if so, what should you take?
- Should I be concerned about nausea, and if so, what should I take?
- Are there any prescriptions or over-the-counter meds that I should get prior to surgery?
- Any limitation on the amount of weight that can be lifted?
- Restriction on exercise?
- What follow up appintments will be scheduled?
- Do you need to change any of your current medications prior to surgery? Example: if on a blood thinner/aspirin, do you need to stop taking it prior to surgery?
And of course, warning signs, when should I contact the team? And who do I contact?

Make sure you have contact numbers if you have questions.

These are things typically covered in a pre-op appointment, but make sure your questions and concerns are answered.

Hi, @azkellyw - it sounds like now you have had your surgical evaluation about the gastric sleeve. How did it go? What new information did you find out?

I have my first initial consultation with the surgeon coming up soon where we discuss the options and whether I will be a good candidate or not and wondering if there is anything you wish you would have asked or known about before the appointment? I watched the required videos and am pretty "up-to-date" on the required educational material prior. What can I expect at this appointment? I'm nervous!

@cskluz - It's understandable that before taking on any major surgery you might feel nervous.

Do you have a type of bariatric surgery you personally would prefer to have? What would you say is making you the most nervous?

I’m leaning towards the RNY. I’m more nervous that after all the work I’ve put in and the fact that I can’t take the injections anymore due to my liver not liking them that I’ll still be denied the surgery although I meet all requirements. I’m a bit nervous from all the horror stories I’ve heard and that people end up regretting their decision. I’ve thought about this surgery for 2 years before I decided to ask my doctor about it.

@cskluz , I’ve actually heard that GLP1 meds help liver health. I need to explore this. I’m not taking one, but have discussed it with my endocrinologist for future use. They provide so many benefits.

Mine actually caused my liver enzymes to skyrocket (zepbound) and the. Switched to Wegovy but wegovy did nothing for me. And then I went from 1 lesion to 4 on my liver as well within 6 months. My weightloss provider told me no more injections
