Suprahilar left lung mass

Posted by deedee1981 @deedee1981, Nov 27, 2022

Waiting on consult with Mayo Clinic Thoracic Surgical Dept. CT and PET scan showed a mass in left lung anterior adjacent to my pulmonary artery. Too close for a biopsy in my hometown. Small nodule in right lower lung.
Anyone else have a mass in this area and if so…..how did they treat it?

How long were you in the hospital following the VATS? Recovery time after you got home? Was it painful? I’ve never had anything done surgically. Healthy….no meds. Found the mass due to a few days of random back spasms.

As far as tests to expect at Mayo, they wanted a lung function test and a night O2 oximeter test, but I had already done them week before my appointment so did not have to redo. They gave me a surgery date three weeks out. I did another CT scan the day before the surgery. That served as a base for them and for the surgery. Their radiologists are specialized in identifying lung nodules.
Let us know how it goes.

I visited with pulmonologist Dr. Ashley Egan today. Scheduling a CT scan for tomorrow to use in a robotic bronchoscopy with needle biopsy scheduled on Friday. I should know soon. If the mass in my left lung has gotten smaller, we may cancel the biopsy. She said cancer doesn’t get smaller…..so if it has shrunk, it could just be an infection.

I just viewed my CT report. The mass has decreased in size from the first CT in October. Everything looks better to me. Waiting to talk to the doctor to hear her thoughts. My guess is that cancer doesn’t get smaller without treatment. Maybe I have a fungal infection.??

Good news……my bronchoscopy was cancelled. Repeating the CT scan in 2 months. I will come back here to the Mayo Clinic. My hometown hospital was ready to do surgery. So glad for second opinions. And I’m sure the time has allowed the “infection” to decrease the size of my mass. From almost 4 cm to 1.9 cm. Good luck to everyone else here. Mayo Clinic is the best!

Great!!!!
And an important lesson. Get a second opinion from respected qualified source. Because the procedure offered you at Mayo (robotic bronchoscopy) has fewer complications than a CT guided needle biopsy.
It is important to understand what the various diagnostic and treatment options for cancer are and which institutions offer them. Unfortunately, that is not easy to do when one is presented with a sudden problem and little time to research.

Hi deedee1981, I came across your post while looking for something similar to my husband’s CT scan, and found you have very similar results.
How are things going now? Did you end up having the biopsy or surgery?

Never mind, I disregard this question, I didn’t see all the other responses when I had asked you in the first place, hope all is well and continue to get better!!
