Sudden sound increases in Phonak Hearing Aid
My son 12 years has moderate to severe hearing loss and wears hearing aids. We live in Pakistan.
For last couple of weeks he has started to complain that his hearing aids sound goes up suddenly for 15-20 seconds then comes back to normal. His PHONAK Naida V90 aids were giving some issues within a year (company says corrosion due to sweat !! ) so we got the SEM (inside machine) replaced and they are supposed to be as good as new as per PHONAK management (is this correct ? or there may be other issues...).
With this new replaced SEM pair he has this complain of sound going up and down few times a day in a normal home environment as well as outside. Fan noise also goes up as well as conversation level. He starts feeling uncomfortable suddenly, reduces the volume, but then as it comes back to "normal" he has to increase volume again.
His Audiogram is okay almost same level as before. My fear is could this be something to do with his loss or some internal ear issue which should be concerning ? He also experienced Tinnitus issue few times. It seems Audiologists don't understand much here, they simply sell hearing aids and can't figure out what to do for such things. Any help and guidance what to do ?

@araw, @wayne52, @tonyinmi, @afeek: hey, Phonak aid peers! I have additional problem with my Phonak hearing aids in my (‘25 Toyota Crown) new car, since installing the Phonak app into the car. Now with incoming calls I can hardly hear the caller no matter if I am in the car or not. I am forced to say to every caller , “I will call you right back”. When I call them back, a black box appears that says, “where do you want this call to go. Options- cel phone, hearing aids”. When I click on hearing aids, the call is dialed & I have no problem hearing them. I am unable to find a way in the Phonak app to access the black box to be able to change the option to “cel phone”.
I will appreciate all HELP!!! Thx.
@dbamos1945 Streaming volume is controlled by the phone. The hearing aid microphone volume is controlled by the hearing aid (or hearing aid app). With my Oticon's and iPhone 14, I use the buttons on the phone to control the streaming volume. When I listen to music from my phone, I will mute the microphones (via the Oticon Companion app). This way, I listen to the music at the lowest desired setting without risk to damaging the residual hearing I have left.

1 Reaction@bruceandruth1970 I use the default program (the one that it goes to when you first turn them on), for normal listening. It depends on how the audiologist set them up so yours may be different.

2 Reactions@scottk Yes, mine automatically adjust for wind noise too but its not a separate program, just a feature. The audiologist may have to enable that feature. It's really crazy because the app may give you the ability to toggle the wind noise reduction. It depends on the level of hearing aid that you purchased. I went a tier down with these Oticon's so I have no control on the wind noise. My previous Resounds were the upper tier and I could toggle the wind noise feature at will.

1 ReactionHello @wayne52 and others , I am. only 8 days itto wearing Phonak Audeo150-R aids! I do hope I can deal with the glitches , shall we say, of the App. I asked google which hearing aid companion App is the most reliable and one choice was Starkey. I am so depressed to find other posts on line that say MyPhoak is the "the worst " !! @tonyinmi You've already worn two brands of hearing aids ? over what time period may I ask ?? I do hope I can also get used to the discomfort of wearing Behind the Ear aids with glasses !!! I'm going to the see the optometrist for new thinner frames !! All told this is turning out to be expensive !! Gotta run - thanks for listening !!
@nyxygirl I've been wearing hearing aids my entire adult life. I used to always buy Starkey because the audiologists used to recommend them for their power. It may have been a lie since I've had positive results with other manufacturers. I have always needed custom molds and elected to use the full shell, in-the-ear models. Many years ago I tried Phonak because the "micro zoom" feature was supposed to be the best for background noise reduction. Again, I think that may have been a lie since the Phonaks were no better than the Starkeys with background noise. The Resounds were the first time I went with the behind-the-ear model. I bought Resound in Oct 2017 and they did perform better than all the previous aids but it was most likely due to the technology improvements. I then went with my current aids, Oticon, in May 2023. I've had Bluetooth problems ever since Bluetooth was available. The problems are not serious, but for the price we pay, we should not have any quirks.

2 ReactionsHello all , I too noticed that this conversation is quite old , and I replied above with some questions/comments about Audeo hearing aids the myPhonak App. I think I saw on the FAQ that intermittent change in volume -what I think the original poster was asking - is the result of the hearing aids "rebooting". I don't even want to deal with a car problem that @dbamos1945 is describing !! I'm a Mayo Connect user because of a rheumatic issue I had a few years ago, it's great to know I can come hear to talk about hearing aids !! thanks

2 ReactionsI also got the new Phonak hearing aids with the Roger 3 mic. I am very disappointed in them when I am in a noisy environment.
