Strontium citrate, fractures and lack of research
I am looking to see if there are any studies done that show a reduced chance of fracture from using Strontium citrate (Algaecal) as opposed to calcium. Everything I have read only mentions increase of density using it. Does anyone have doctor input or a study showing an decrease in bone fractures?
***Director's Note:***
There’s not enough clinical research to know if strontium citrate effectively prevents or treats osteoporosis. Mayo Clinic does not recomend its use. Clinically researched osteoporosis medications have demonstrated fracture prevention benefit with less risk.
The FDA doesn’t regulate supplements in the same way as prescription drugs, so it's not possible to know if if they are safe or work well or even how much of the main ingredient they contain.
If you wish to take a strontium supplement, it is advised to discuss with your doctor.

Are you going to take strontium renelate or strontium citrate? I am not sure they have the same effect on bone. I listened to a podcast about strontium citrate. He said it doesn't fill in the bones like calcium. I also know from my sister taking it and then quitting that you lose all the density you gained when you stop. I hope it works for you. I am still apprehensive about fracture risk.
There were 2 small studies using strontium citrate along with other micronutrients. One from Canada was the COMB study the other was from Duquesne University in the US which was more detailed in that they looked at the bone composition. They both showed reduced fractures and bone strengthening similar to Fosamax. I thing it was called the Mots study. I used the recommendations from both , in part, and I reversed my osteoporosis to osteopenia while taking prednisone. I plan to continue. Calcium
was dietary.

4 ReactionsI am going to use strontium citrate but first I decided to check my heart, etc. My father had infarcts and thrombosis and I do not want to increase my risks of this.

2 ReactionsCould you please post those links to the two small studies please?
You mean that you took strontium at the same time when you used prednisolone?
Yes I’ve Been on prednisone since 2014 for polymyalgia rheumatica .

I incorporated the mcronutrients from these 2 studies except for melatonin, dha.
I was too weak to exercise but my bone density improved. Lots of dietary calcium.

1 Reaction@karenjaninaz Can you share which specific tablets/capsules you have found that incorporate all of the elements recommended in the studies? Thanks!

3 ReactionsA friend of a friend has been talking to me about the benefits of Algaecal for quite some time. She claims that she had a significant improvement in DEXA scores after 18 months using the product.
As there seems to be some empirical evidence that it works, perhaps there is something to the story - but why, if it works so well, are docs not prescribing it, if not in place of the poison we put into our bodies, as a supplement to it. We should be buying stock in Algaecal . . . and so should our docs!
To those who enjoy reading long-winded studies about strontium or other supplements, if you can find a short-winded way of saying Algaecal (or other strontium products) works, sign me up! If this product does not improve t-scores, I seem to remember a $-back guarantee…maybe I should give it a go!
I really do appreciate everyone’s contributions to this board - thank you all.
Cheers!!
