Sterilizing a spacer used with inhaler

Posted by paxmundi @paxmundi, 2 days ago

I am just starting on MAC treatment and my doctor wants me to use a spacer with the inhaler before I take Arikayce. I have a compact space chamber by Medical Developments International and I want to know how any of you sterilize your spacer if you use one.

Many thanks in advance.

I clean my spacer with Dawn and a soft bottle brush reserved for the job. I have never attempted to sterilize as I think it would melt. There is a spacer Vortex? that can withstand high heat and therefore could be sterilized. follow the manufacturer's directions.

@scoop Yes, the Vortex spacer survives boiling. When you cannot inhale slowly enough to avoid a squeak, it is timee to replace. Mine last about 6 months with weekly boiling.

Thanks for this!

Sue, how long can you boil it for, and do you use yours everyday? If Arikayce works for me, my pulmonologist wants me to use inhaler every day before I nebulize Arikayce.

I am on levofloxacin 750. I just took my 3rd dose and I am experiencing some pain in my shoulder which had already subsided. Can anyone comment on that and what to expect in the days ahead.

@paxmundi Mine boils for 10 minutes once a week. Since I only inhale through it, that seems safe to me. I use the spacer 2-3 times a day. I don't currently have any infection.

Thanks, Sue. I had assumed the opposite—that when you breathe in, there is more chance of catching something. But what you are doing is obviously working so I am happy to have this information. I’ll call the company this Monday and find out if what I have tolerates boiling. If not I’ll get what you have.

May you always stay clear of infection!

I was on levitwin, which is the brand name. I started having pain in my ankles. Then, the next time I was on it my knees. Every time I was on it, the pain moved into more joints to the point where I ended up at the hospital in such severe pain. I told my doctor but they ignored it. They continued to order levaquin every time I had lung infection. The main side effect is rapturing your achilles tendon. But it affected me in all my joints. Needless to say, it's on my list of allergies

I use vortex( long time ago scoop mentioned it) and I sterilize daily. I believe it starts buzzing after more than six months.

Do you sterilize by boiling? For how long?
