Statin Side-effects: Muscle pain and weakness
I’ve been on a statin drug for over 25 years. In the last year my legs have gotten very weak & painful. I now have to use my arms to get out of a chair & it’s still difficult. Can the side effects start after I’ve taken the statin for so long? Anyone else have this sudden problem?

Thanks for all the links. Very helpful. I really liked Dr Nadir’s presentation. I stopped the statins several months ago. My cardiologist prescribed them to me on Feb 2025. Started to have bad side effects. I decided to go with the nutritional way. Cholesterol is really needed in the body. Pharma just keep pushing all these drugs to get billions of dollars!!
Not sure who said ALL cardiologists love statins. I said, “Opinions are all over the place.”
Statins are the lesser of 2 evils. Only fools believe in no negative sides
You are one of the lucky ones! A lot of people take statins and only suffer joint aches and pains. Some, like me, suffer feet, ankle and calf stiffness, and aches and leather or crispy feet pads, PLUS joint aches and pains. So sad. I stopped taking my statins, but still have the calf stiffness, aching and leathery feet pads(but better since not taking statins).
I had ALL of the side effects and was pretty miserable. Stopped my stain and like magic I had more energy and no aching joint pain or discomfort. The leathery feet pads and calf aching and stiffness is another story 🙁 Trying to find a doctor who can talk about these, but it is a big challenge. I don't understand why it came back after stopping my statin. So weird.

If you have an experienced and trusted medical provider they are the best source for you on medical advice including statins. We are all different and with that everyone reactions to any medication can and usually is different. That is with any drug not just statins.
How did I go on statins? I had 5 shockes of my ICD/Pacemaker. When went to ER they took me to catherization lab. They found arteries partly clogged but blood flowing freely so did not put stents in.
My cardiologist put me on statin to help prevent further clogging of arteries. My LDL was cut in half. I was also asked to take fish oil for tryglecrides which also cut it almost in half.
So my journey to statin was to prevent any further clogging of arteries. Now I should say help prevent not prevent in my post here.
I stopped it too and still I have a strange feeling . I don’t have pain. They feel leathery. I read not long ago that statins affect so much the muscular system that even after stopping them, side effects could keep on going. I know that Pharma knows how dangerous statins are but it is a gold mine for them.

From what I read here on MCC, yes I am lucky. My wife was also put on statin by Mayo cardilogist. She did have some muscle pain. I asked her to contact her cadiologist about taking Co-Q-10 if he did not discuss that with her. She did and started taking Co-Q-10 like me and her pain went away.
We are all unique human beings and will react differently to medications. I took the statins and my LDL went in half. But to contrast that I was overweight and about a year ago asked to go on weight control shots. They did nothing for me as I read on MCC success for others. I was envious but was told by my Mayo PCP that we are all different and their statistics that some do not benefit or react to this medications like others.
Now a caveat to that. When I went on the highes dose after going through all the lower doses I had extreme reaction (on going vomiting, nausea, headaches, miserable). So nothing until on higest dose then severe reacation.
I know weight loss medication not same as statin but just showing we are all going to have difererent reactions to medications some good and some bad. What I found is if something bothers you keep trying to find something that does work that does not have side affects for you.
I was not able to take statins. Try as I might, no go. My doctor started me on Ezetimibe 3X a week and I have not had any negative side effects. It is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor, not a statin.
Hi, jc76 - Thank you for posting about your experience with statins. Glad to har the CoQ10 helped your wife. Even though the research about the benefits of taking CoQ10 is 'mixed', it certainlly helped me with leg cramps, and it wasn't a "placebo" effect either. I also had good results lowering my cholesterol levels with statins, but the side effects are horrible for me, so I just can't tolerate them. You are correct that everyone's body has different chemistry and inherited DNA/genes. One day, if our federal government stops interferring, with medical research, our researchers will make more progress in how to make statins more tolerate to everyone, not just a few. Meanwhile, we just do the best we can to hobble along. d.
