Stage 1 Bladder Cancer: Anyone had treatment with Gemcitabine?

Posted by sue225 @sue225, Jan 22, 2020

My 78 year old husband has been living with non-invasive bladder cancer for about 14 years. He had a recurrence in December, (had TURB surgery)and is now going to be treated with a new drug called "Gemcitabine" (by infusion via urethra). In the past he has been treated with BCG following TURB procedure, but had a bad reaction to the BCG five years ago. On one other occasion, mitomycin was given. Wanting to hear from others who have been treated with gemcitabine and if the treatment worked . The urologists in Canada have just started using this drug for Stage 1 bladder cancer. Thanks.

Hi Plugger, my Sister is about to have another TURBT and her Urologist is going to give her a Mitomycin wash, would you mind telling me how the Mitomycin is paid for here in Australia? is it charged seperately to the TURBT or as part of the surgery? hope you don't mind me asking. She has private health cover, but we are not sure if they will cover the cost of the Mitomycin. Her TURBT will be performed in a private hospital. Hope you are going OK? what a journey this bladder cancer is.

Hi Colleen, thank you, she is doing OK, she didn't actually see the Dr after her surgery, but she had the Mitomycin wash and he wants to see her with the results in a month and a cystocopy 3 months, so until we get the pathology we don't know much more. As for the cost of the mitomycin, we haven't had to pay for anything so far, but not sure if a bill will come later. thank you again for replying and enquiring.
