spotting then bleeding after knee injection for injury

Posted by lee60 @lee60, Jul 1, 2022

I am 63, menopausal for 8 years. One episode abnormal vaginal bleeding in late 50's d/t taking BHRT. Ultrasound and endometrial biopsy results normal. 10 days after receiving 80mg Kenalog in knee joint started spotting and now on day 15, bleeding is heavier. No other symptoms like cramping, bloating etc. Stopped BHRT 2 years ago. Anyone experienced this? Any suggestions on what to do?

Hi @lee60, well that has to be rather unnerving. This is pretty late in the game to have any spotting or bleeding. In my opinion, if you’ve been menopausal for 8 years and are experiencing any type of unusual symptoms from your reproductive system, I’d say, hightail it to your gynecologist to have this checked out ASAP. Your ultrasound and biopsy are no longer current so you really need to have this new development evaluated.
Will you please make an appointment to put your mind at ease and then let me know?

Thanks for your comment! I'm planning to do just that. My regular gynecologist retired 2 years ago and I'm having to find one (which I SHOULD have done when he did, lesson learned). I've been a nurse for over 40 years so I have heard of this bleeding happening after cortisone shots, just never seen it. Curious as to how often it happens considering the number of people that get these shots to help with joint pain. Will keep you posted!

Oh wow, that’s really interesting! I’ve never heard of bleeding as a side effect from cortisone shots. But you sparked my curiosity and I was surprised by the number of articles which popped up stating just that! I learned something new.
But I’d still have that checked out. ☺️

Hello!
I began getting cortisone shots in my knees last spring, and have had them multiple times since.
11 days after first round of shots, I started my period after being 2 years into menopause.
The orthopedist and clinic had never heard of this. My doctor had never heard of this. After multiple tests and biopsies it was determined to be a side effect.
I had shots last week, and guess what started when I woke up today?!
There is so little information on this correlation - but I'm here to tell you, it exists.
It is a bummer side effect, but it is worth it so I can move comfortably. Hot flashes, maxi pads and all 🙂

Same here...I am at the biopsy phase waiting for result. I spotted 10 days post injection and had 2nd injection and am spotting again 10 days later. My ultrasound showed 6/7mm lining so she wanted biopsy. Did you have a thickening of the uterus lining?

I also had spotting after hip injection. Endometrial lining went up from over 4 to eventually 8. I had neg biopsies but was talked into a hyscopy d and c. Only had 2 small polops everything negitive. I havnt had anymore shots since august, almost 8mths ago and no spotting. Go figure.

That is exactly my journey! It was showing 7mm so they did some biopsies and they came back clear. So now I just expect to have a period after the shots. It’s so weird!

It is a rare side effect, apparently. I guess it is better that they don't say it is possible cause some women may not call their gyno for check up. Although scary to have the biopsy and wait, I definitely feel relief knowing why I am having the spotting. 🙂
