Splenic Cyst

Posted by stew201 @stew201, Jul 15, 2011

After having a CT scan with contrast for a post op mass, an unrelated 11cm cyst was found incidentally on my spleen. This finding has perplexed my primary physician and the hematologist that I was going to be referred to (I have an HMO). I am awaiting bloodwork to determine if the cyst is parasitic, but beyond that, I'm just told to take a wait and see approach if it's not parasitic. Does anyone have any experience with a splenic cyst? Isn't a mass that large on such a small organ dangerous?

Yes actually they just called me and I go in for surgery to have my spleen removed next Friday. She said there was no other way since it was inside my spleen

@renesbaby19 That was fast! I’m so happy for you that you’re finally going to get some much needed relief! I’m, sure now there is trepidation for having the surgery. But you can live without a spleen as the liver takes over many of the functions. In your case, removing the spleen, and getting that organ out which is creating such havoc inside your body, will certainly have an overall positive affect.

If you’re interested I’m posting a link below from the Mayo Clinic regarding the removal of the spleen.

Is your surgery July 16th? I’m eager to know how you’re doing afterwards. Will you report back to us? Your experience will be valuable for other members on our community.

I’ll be checking in on you too! Wishing you the best possible outcome!
Big hug!! Lori.

@renesbaby19 Of course you’re scared. That’s pretty human!
But this next week and a half will go quickly. Don’t dwell on the surgery but set your mind to little tasks to prepare for it and focus on the healing and positive life changes afterwards! ☺️

Will you be in the hospital for a few days or is this laparoscopically as an out patient?
Did you receive an informational packet on how to prepare for surgery and what to expect during recovery?

Recovery time appears to be about 2 weeks before all normal activities can be resumed. Do you have family members with you who will be able to help around the house?

I am trying to stay focused and it will be done in the hospital she hasn't told me much yet said I would be in for 3 days she had to keep a eye on my blood Plattes and she said recovery would be about 3 weeks if everything goes good. And yes I have my wife at home and my son who will be 15 on July 12th so plenty of help at home.

Hi, @renesbaby, how are you doing after your surgery yesterday? I hope it was successful and that you’ll be feeling so much better soon! It’s a relief you were able to finally have the procedure done after suffering for so many years. Can you notice a difference already of less pressure in your stomach without the enlarged spleen?

Oh noooo! That’s frustrating, huh! But better safe than sorry. Especially if it’s a medication that can thin your blood and prevent it from clotting. Well, golly, now another 5 days to distract yourself! I’ll be eager to hear how everything goes for you. Thinking of you… ☺️

Hello @renesbaby19

I was noticing that your surgery was rescheduled for July 22. Were you able to have the surgery that day? If so, I was wondering how you are doing.
