Spinal fusion with pelvic fixation (T-3 to pelvis), now having trouble

Posted by allison49 @allison49, May 12, 2025

Had spinal cord damage thoracic T-3 ,4, 5. Also spondylitis, spondylitis, foraminal, osteocytes . All spine issues were taken care of with fusion( 4 rods , 32 screws). Legs just will not work properly. Nerves , muscles not on same page. I can walk but not much else. Leg nerve tests showed nerves strong. My quads feel like half frozen chicken thighs. Hams and quads fighting each other. Front of legs feel like I have catchers gear on. Trying to get back to playing sports. Shins feel like bees under skin. Numb front of legs but not back of legs.

I'm having a pelvis to T3 fusion next week and am afraid of the 2 day surgery and that it won't work. I currently have scoliosis in my lower back and neck and terrible sciatica. Neurosurgeon is confident he can help me but I'm scared

I echo Karen's response. I am 18 months out and would do it again in a heartbeat T12-S2 but I work at it every day to stretch and strengthen. It simply takes time for full fusion and to get back little by little to your new normal life. I had a set back of my own making with a bicycling accident. Luckily my spine was ok. I can stand in line, stand to cook, walk 4 miles plus, rode my bike 75 miles this week! But it is a journey and step by step. Good luck and reach out for support. I set my house up room to room so I could reach things on my own. Raised my W/D. Pick up sticks in every room and car. Love my $35 swivel seat to use in my car and dining room table from Amazon. I had a stool riser and an secure bed grip and a squirt bottle for water while recouping was really handy. Tamra
